Who comes to CSS?

Everyone! Summer Scholars has hosted students from 42 states and 6 countries. It is perfect for any student interested in immersion in a chosen field of study and life on a college campus. Our students are bright, motivated thinkers looking to creatively and freely explore their interests in a setting that is much more than just summer school. Summer Scholars are interested in reallife applications of their chosen courses, so our project-based classes are perfect for them. Solving mock crimes, broadcasting live on-air, and observing a veterinary operation are only a sample of the excitement in class.

Our Summer Scholars are not interested solely in academics. They also look to the wide variety of evening activities we provide and the diversity of friends they make on campus. Students interact with everyone in the program – from the Directors to the RAs to students in other classes – and discover role models and make new friends during their time at Centenary!

Who will my suite mates be? What are the residence halls like?

Suite mates are matched by age and the information provided in the roommate section of the application. Students are housed on floors by gender, and staff lives on each floor. Summer Scholars students stay in Founders Hall, and the accommodations are a highlight of our program! There are four students per suite, each with his or her own private bedroom. The building is fully air-conditioned, and each suite offers four bedrooms and two bathrooms, oriented off of a main living room and kitchen. Each floor has common lounges with televisions, ping-pong and foosball tables, couches and quiet areas. Founders Hall is secure with key-card access and 24-hour Campus Safety.

I'm flying to camp, can someone pick me up?

Yes; the College offers drivers and vans to pick-up and drop-off students at Newark Airport. Summer Scholars staff members escort students. For those who choose this service, full payment and travel information must be submitted by June 1.

Can I bring my cell phone or laptop?

Students may bring their cell phones; however, we have a strict cell phone use policy, and students must check their phones with the camp office when they arrive on Sunday. We do this for two reasons: phone use can be disruptive to the learning environment and can prevent students from connecting with the new friends and mentors around them. Students may take cell phones on all off-campus trips, as an extra level of safety. Students and parents may reach each other at any time in the case of an emergency, 24-hours a day, through the program office and security office phone numbers. Students may not bring personal laptops to the program but may use the campus computers for email and Internet use.

How well supervised are the students while attending Centenary?

Safety is our top priority, and the environment we create is filled with excitement, relaxation, and opportunity. Throughout the day, students are offered a variety of supervised activities tailored to their interests and energy levels. With an experienced, highly-trained staff and college security, Summer Scholars provides the necessary supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of our students at all times.
