While learning, I met many new friends that I still keep in contact with and will be returning to Scholars this summer. I also enjoyed the facility. The dorms were clean and the campus was easy to access.

Campus

The program takes over a residence hall, and the residence hall is the center of the universe for all of our students.  Day/commuter students are dropped off at the residence hall, and they hang out with everyone in the lounges, common rooms, and room suites during down time and in between classes etc.  Residential students live in suites with their new roommates.  Over the course of the week the students decorate, write on each others’ doors, and basically get the chance to live and learn like College students.  It is a wonderful experience.  And since our program has always had the entire building for ourselves, we have never had to share with outsiders, other kinds of programs, random adults, or anyone else.  It's just us – and that has led to a wonderful vibe that permeates our entire program.

In terms of off-campus surroundings and environs, Centenary College lies in the heart of a lovely, historic Victorian village. Students enjoy the rich scenery that the surrounding community has to offer, including the beautiful architecture in downtown Hackettstown. The area is safe, clean, nice and pretty.... a perfect backdrop for this kind of program.

On Campus Highlights:

REEVES STUDENT CENTER: Our recreation center is essentially brand-new, having undergone extensive renovations. It is the main hub for campus sports with playing courts, an indoor swimming pool, and gymnasium.  Sports are not required and many of our students would never consider going to the rec center, but many students may avail themselves of the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment during certain scheduled times.

FOUNDERS HALL: SUITE-STYLE LIVING THROUGHOUT: The residence hall is one of the most popular features of our program.  In prior years, no other program has shared the residence hall and it becomes the main centerpiece of the program.  Each student is housed in a suite.  The suites are fully air-conditioned with individual bedrooms for every student. Each suite has four bedrooms and two bathrooms oriented off of a main living room and kitchen. The main living room (the shared social space in each suite) has couches, coffee table and is where the students can hang out.  Each suite also features a kitchenette.  In addition to the suites, the building boats a large common space which is the centerpiece for the social aspects of the program.  It features televisions, couches, ping-pong and foosball tables, and quiet areas.  This large common area serves as a social nexus and centerpoint to the day.

LACKLAND CENTER: This 22,000-square foot performing arts center is the most sophisticated space of its kind in northwest New Jersey. It houses a 500-seat theater, our TV studio and production facility, our College radio station, and our state-of-the-art dining hall.

STUDENT SAFETY: Campus is patrolled 24 hours a day by Centenary College Security. Our residence hall, suites and rooms are card access only. Our staff lives in the halls with the students, providing supervision at all times.

DINING HALL: Our dining hall is new and features all of the best options of modern collegiate dining.  There are vegetarian and meat options at every meal, along with an awesome salad bar and a well-stocked ice cream bar for each meal.  There are multiple dishes offered, and a large array of soft drinks and other beverages.  The multitude of offerings, located at numerous clean and bright stations, creates a healthy and fun atmosphere.  The hall itself is large, spacious, and bright with lots of windows overlooking the quad ad a host of HD flat screen TVs dotting the walls.  It really is everything a modern collegiate dining hall can be!

Community

Our skilled and enthusiastic staff is committed to teaching strong courses, leading fantastic activities, and maximizing the unique experience of a residential youth program environment. In addition to being teachers and activity leaders, our staff excels as role models and mentors.

Most of our staff returns each year, providing continuity and intellectual capital.  We know what works and we strive to quickly build a fun community.  The staff is typically comprised of our program director, academic director, residence life director, teachers, and resident advisors. The directors oversee all aspects of the program, making sure the students are well engaged, growing academically and socially, staying safe, and having fun. Staff live in the residence halls with the students to ensure 24-hour availability and supervision.

We incorporate the college's energy and experience into the summer program and include our Summer Scholars in the exciting world of a collegiate campus. Join us for the summer of a lifetime and a college experience you will never forget.
