Veterinary Science
The homo sapiens is literally the only animal a veterinarian is not licensed to practice on. This course will explore topics in veterinary science including comparative anatomy as well as real-world applications of specific skills as it relates to actual situations. A veterinarian is not only a clinician and but also a scientist. In this way, we develop a body of knowledge, and demonstrate how this knowledge can be used to treat unfamiliar species as a matter of course. This course introduces students to the veterinary field, teaches them many skills in working with animals, and gives them a leg up on medical or life science courses they may take in the future. Students will experience different aspects of veterinary medicine by having the opportunity to observe a veterinary practice and learn scientific fundamentals in the laboratory. Case studies will allows students to practice problem solving and ask questions to come up with diagnoses. Students may have the opportunity to perform the dissections typically done by first year veterinary students to learn anatomy. In the past, our class has made trips to the following: Centenary Equine Center, Hackettstown Livestock Auction, and local veterinarian offices. Depending on the circumstances, weather and other factors including scheduled surgeries, we will attempt to do these trips each session. Students learn about the anatomy of large and small animals, animal handling, husbandry and basic medical care. They address real veterinary situations as well as gain an understanding of important topics in veterinary medicine ranging from ethics to management. Students' favorite lessons from previous summers have included dissecting a horse leg, dressing wounds, and learning about the wide variety of careers in the veterinary field. They also enjoyed visiting the Centenary College Equestrian Center to work with the horses. This is always one of the most popular courses in our program and is the first to sell out. |
