Fine Arts Studios
One of the best parts about our fine arts program is that students have plenty
of opportunities to explore personal interests through their art. Each project
focuses on a specific medium or technique and allows the student flexibility in
structure and subject matter.
This is an engaging course for all artists, from the beginner to the experienced,
the shy to the self-confident. Students work on a number of projects each week,
and each session ends with an exhibit of student work.
Week 1: Drawing and Painting
Through a range of projects, students practice gesture, proportion, perspective,
line quality, color fields, composition and style. They experiment with charcoal,
pencil, pastel, marker, and paints – using the mediums separately and combined.
Week 2: Mixed Media Collage
Students learn to collage in three dimensions. The teacher guides them in
collecting and combining found objects, traditional art and craft media, text,
graphic design, photography and much more. Students focus on message,
intent, material choice and composition.
Week 3: Print Making
Print-making is not only an artistic medium in its own right, but also a great
way for all artists and designers to practice working with positive and negative
spaces in their compositions. Students learn a variety of tools and techniques.
Week 4: Woven Design
This course is a hands-on introduction to traditional and non-traditional loom
weaving, including winding warps, dressing the loom and weaving techniques.
Students also learn about pattern-making, and incorporating unusual materials.
Students build and take home their own looms along with their weavings.
