Centenary College Sports Management Association and Basketball Team Sponsor Easter Seals Fun Run

04/16/2014, 03:53 PM

Hackettstown, N.J. - Kyle Malavasi, a Sports Management senior at Centenary College, is spearheading a Fun Run/Walk to benefit the Easter Seals of New Jersey on April 27, 2014. Supporting him are the Men’s Basketball Team and the Sports Management Association, which will be sponsoring the event. All members of the community, as well as Centenary students and staff, are welcome to support this event.

The Easter Seals of New Jersey has been assisting people with disabilities and special needs since 1948. Over 7,000 people with disabilities including autism, physical disabilities, mental illnesses and other special needs receive the help and services of the Easter Seals every year. Each summer, the Easter Seals hosts the Merry Heart summer camp where people with disabilities and special needs can participate in fun, group activities as well as outdoor activities and weekend trips. The Easter Seals also offer services to military veterans, adults who are homeless or have developmental disabilities, and community outreach programs.

In the summer of 2013, Malavasi interned with the Easter Seals, and after participating in Camp Merry Heart’s summer carnival, he was inspired to contribute in whatever way he could.

“It is a really inspiring program,” says Malavasi. “I really loved interning for the Easter Seals. Their services help a lot of people and I wanted to find a way to give back.”

As a Sports Management major, Malavasi has used his classroom experiences in event planning and management to help him begin this fundraiser. He credits his knowledge base to Professor David Perricone, Assistant Professor of Sports Management at Centenary College.

“Professor Perricone has been a huge help,” he says.  “The strategies I learned in his classes and my experience working at this year’s Super Bowl were the key to successfully starting this event.”

The Fun Run/Walk will take place on the Centenary College campus. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the run/walk starts at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is also available at https://eastersealsnjfunrun.eventbrite.com. Participants are asked to donate $10 to run and $5 to walk. A monetary donation can also be made to the Easter Seals of New Jersey for those who do not wish to participate in the run/walk. This event will run for two hours, and food and beverages will be provided.

The rain date for the Easter Seals Fun Run/Walk is Saturday, May 3, 2014.
