Centenary College Sports Marketing Students Conduct Autism Awareness Walk

10/15/2013, 10:00 AM

Hackettstown, N.J.  – Members of the Centenary College Sports Marketing class will be managing a 3K Walk/Run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. October 27, 2013, in front of the David and Carol Lackland Center.  Pre-registration cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children.  The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children on the day of the event.  Participants can conduct their walk or run anytime during that time period.

“This assignment provides the students with real life experience,” says Professor David Perricone, Assistant Professor of Sports Management and instructor of the Sports Marketing course.  “This exercise is an important résumé builder for these students and I am pleased that they are giving their all to make this event one that is a success.”

This opportunity will benefit Autism Speaks U.  Launched in 2008, Autism Speaks U is a program designed to support college students in their awareness, advocacy and fundraising efforts for Autism Speaks. It is an exciting and collaborative way for students to get involved with Autism Speaks and support their local autism community.

Since its inaugural event, Autism Speaks U events have raised over $1 million and student-organized Walk teams have brought in millions more.

“I love the fact that this class incorporates experiential learning opportunities,” says Natalia Ortega, student and co-manager of this project.  “When we were asked to pick a cause that we wanted to support, I immediately chose Autism Awareness as I have a family member who faces the everyday challenges of autism.  It is truly a passion of mine.”
