Make this Summer One to Remember by Participating in the Summer at Centenary Program
Hackettstown, N.J. - Spend the summer at Centenary! This year, the College is offering programs designed for those who want to earn extra college credit or enjoy various enrichment programs or extracurricular activities, enhance their athletic skills, delve into the performing arts, or get a taste of College with the Summer Scholars Program.
“Often the transfer from high school to college can be a stressful experience for many students,” says Mary Painter, Director of Student Services and Coordinator of the Summer Scholars Program at Centenary. “Summer Scholars at Centenary is designed to provide these students with a snapshot of the college experience while providing them with the opportunity to explore their academic passions. This amazing program of courses and activities not only eases the transfer experience, but will also ensure that the students are growing academically and having fun in the process. It is a great complement to Centenary’s other wonderful summer programs.”
Middle and high school students interested in getting a taste of the college experience can participate in the Centenary’s Summer Scholars Program, which is a co-ed academic program for rising 8th through 12th grade students, from July 8, 2012, through July 28, 2012. Students can choose from a number of one-week courses: Creative Writing, Fashion Design, Just Dance, Veterinary Science, Television Production, Radio Production, Forensic Science, Going Green, Computer Programming & Game Design, and more. All courses are taught by college professors and knowledgeable instructors. All activities are managed by highly trained camp staff and each session will include a trip to New York City.
Day and residential options are offered. Students living nearby can take advantage of the academic programs and return home in the evenings. Students traveling from other states, or who enjoy the residential experience, are welcome to board for one or more sessions.
The Young Performers Workshop, hailed by The Star-Ledger as “a state treasure,” is a professional musical theatre training program for young people ages 8 through 18. The five-week program runs July 16, 2012, to August 19, 2012, on the Centenary campus.
The Summer Intensive offers “conservatory-style” training in acting, voice and dance with specialized electives taught by theatre professionals. The program includes three full-length musical productions and the One Act Play festival performed for the general public. Acceptance into the program is based on an interview with the Program Director.
This summer the Centenary Stage Company will also offer a “Masters Series” acting class for adults, taught by Anne Occhiogrosso and stage and film luminary, Randal Duk Kim, one of the most highly regarded interpreters of classical theatrical text in the county. Occhiogrosso and Kim are the founding Artistic Directors of the classical American Players Theatre, and Occhiogrosso studied with Morris Carnovsky and Phoebe Brand, original members of the renowned Group Theatre. The class will focus on Shakespeare, and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 10 – 26th.
The Summer Dance Intensive provides the dance community with affordable, high-quality dance instruction taught by masters in the field of dance. The four day intensive ensues July 9, 2012, through July 12, 1012, in the dance studio of the David and Carol Lackland Center on Centenary campus. This year, Carolyn Dorfman, known for taking her audiences on “intellectual and emotional journeys,” will be the intensive’s featured guest artist. The intensive is designed to introduce various dance styles and techniques taught at the collegiate level engaging young dancers to work with professional choreographers, dancers, and educators.
For those who want to sharpen their sports skills, Centenary is offering several sports camps this summer, including boys and girls basketball (boys: June 16-20 and July 23-27; girls: June 25-29 and July 30 - Aug. 3), boys and girls soccer (July 9-13) and weekly wrestling clinics (Wednesday evenings through June 27th). International students can participate in our Summer Culture and Language Program (SCLP), which is a six-week program focusing on English proficiency skills for success in American higher education. Running from early July to mid- August, SCLP offers eight college credit hours upon successful completion. Centenary provides a full range of co-curricular activities that include cultural and educational field trips to New York City,
Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
In addition, the School of International Programs will host thirty-two Chinese High School students from July 1, 2012 through July 14, 2012 for classes on English as a Second Language (ESL), SAT Preparation, and American Culture.
From July 20, 2012 through August 17, 2012, the School of International Programs will host fifty public elementary school teachers from South Korea who will participate in a program on ESL teaching methodologies, the American education system, and American culture.
