Hackettstown, N.J.  – The Warren County Special Services School District is partnering with Centenary College to provide a unique program for members of the community called The H.I.L.L.S House Program at Centenary College. Classes will begin in the Fall.  Interested members should consider attending an open house from 12 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 702 Moore Street in Hackettstown.

“It is a pleasure to work with Centenary College on this exciting initiative,” says Joe Flynn, Superintendent for Warren County Special School District.  “I look forward to embarking on this collaborative opportunity with the administration at the College.”

The H.I.L.L.S House Program (Helping Individuals Learn Life Skills) is designed to foster independence through positive learning experiences.  Each student will have the opportunity to reach his/her highest level of independence in daily living skills before transitioning towards community-based activities.  Warren County Special Services School District can provide transportation to and from each day.  Targeted skill enhancement, as well as measurable vocational goals will help guide students toward pursuing entry level positions in retail and service industries, as well as hospitality and food service employment.

Lessons planned for the H.I.L.L.S. House include home maintenance skills, such as painting, wallpapering, gardening, organizing, cleaning and house safety.  Hospitality skills that are covered include laundry, making beds, clerical tasks, budgeting and hosting an event.  Horticulture skills include gardening, planting, mowing, weeding and planning an outdoor trip.  The Holiday Preparation skills lessons focus on gardening, planting, mowing, weeding and more!

“This initiative is unique in that the students work with teachers in an authentic setting,” says Dr. Timothy Fredericks, Assistant Professor of Education at Centenary College.  “It is very difficult to duplicate this experiential learning process in a traditional classroom.”
