Edward I. Koch’s essay, “Death and Justice: How Capital Punishment Affirms Life,” mentions that life is precious, but at the same time asserts that the death penalty affirms this idea. Koch voices the opinion that any punishment other than the death penalty is ineffective, but the idea of the death penalty for murder is hypocritical.

“The Exorcism”

Hidden among the rundown slums of the city, I spotted the sign. “Turn here,” I said.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes I’m sure. I was here last week, remember?”
“It doesn’t look like there’s anyone here. Are you sure this is the right parking lot?”
“Yes, I’m absolutely sure,” I reiterated, rolling my eyes as I turned my head away from him. It had always been that the two of us could not avoid sarcasm, or condescending stares in any given conversation. I suppose any exceptions or accommodations should not have been made for my sake on this day.
