The Psychology Curriculum

Students earning their B.A. in Psychology at Centenary College will complete a 128-credit curriculum composed of:

  • College Liberal Arts Core Courses
  • Psychology Core Courses
  • Career Concentration Courses
  • Non-Designated Elective Courses

Course content within the Psychology Core includes:

  • Personal and interpersonal awareness
  • Human development
  • Inducing behavior change
  • Research methods and psychological tests
  • Group behavior
  • Normal and abnormal behavior

Psychology is a science; students also complete courses in chemistry and psychobiology, plus a series of psychological research and statistical analysis course modules.

Psychology Major

The Psychology major provides students with fundamental knowledge and marketable skills which are excellent preparation for either immediate employment of graduate studies.

The student with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology is prepared and widely accepted for employment in such career areas as:

  • Human resources
  • Research
  • Education
  • Journalism
  • Government
  • Health care
  • Community services
  • Clinical studies

As preparation for graduate studies,  a Bachelor's degree in Psychology is a recognized prerequisite for advanced psychology studies, law, medicine, education, business, and social work.

Teacher Certification

Qualified students who also wish to become elementary school teachers may pursue their education studies while obtaining their Psychology degree. For such students, Centenary's Teacher Certification program's elementary education courses are carefully integrated into the Psychology curriculum.

Career-Related Interdisciplinary Studies

Psychology majors at Centenary can also acquire one or more career concentrations or minors in other areas of study such as sociology, criminal justice, or business.

Internships

Opportunities for Psychology internships for academic credit are available and have been obtained in over 50 regional clinical, health care, criminal justice and social services.

Psychology Honor Society

Eligible students have the opportunity to become members of the Centenary Chapter of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society. Members plan and participate throughout the academic year in community assistance projects and special events related to psychology.
