- Dr. Shane Fitzpatrick's annual Russia trip examines the language and culture of this intriguing land.
The Political & Governmental Affairs major at Centenary College provides a strong foundation in the study of government and governing procedures, as well as a fundamental understanding of legislative, executive and judicial bodies, political parties, voting behavior and special interest groups.
Students majoring in Political & Governmental Affairs may specialize in American Politics or International Politics.
Students interested in teaching are encouraged to major in History, with a minor in Political Science.
Political Science Minor
Students interested in completing a minor in political science must complete a minimum of 15 credits in political science above and beyond the classes in these areas which may be used to fulfill the College's core requirements or other program requirements.
To minor in political science, all students must take the following: POL101 Introduction to Political Science; POL102 American Federal Government; plus two additional political science courses at the 200 level and one additional political science course at the 300 level.
Internships
Political & Government majors are assisted in obtaining internships. Students have been placed in the Intelligence Section of the NYPD, congressional offices in Washington, DC, the DA's office in Philadelphia, and numerous other State and Local government offices.
Canada Trip
Each year interested students travel to Ottawa to study comparative government. In past years, meetings have been arranged with the Prime Minister and members of Parliament.
Centenary Middle East Peace Conference
Each year, the students of Political Science 307: Politics of the Middle East participate in a model peace conference focusing on the ongoing territorial and humanitarian tensions between the state of Israel and the Palestinian population. Students develop historical and political knowledge of this region and they gain skills in negotiation through role-playing. The fifth draft of the Centenary Accords was completed in Spring 2005.
Model European Union Conference
During 2004, Centenary hosted a regional model European Union Conference at the campus. Five regional colleges participated simulating the Copenhagen Conference, modeling efforts to moderate the problems of a divided Cyprus.
Russia Program
Each June for the past several years, Centenary College offers annual trip to Russia for intensive Russian language, history, and currents events study. The program includes a visit to the Russian Parliament as well as side trips to the countryside.
