Centenary's Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department provides undergraduates an ideal foundation which is complemented by a wide variety of courses to match personal interests and professional aspirations.
We offer a Biology degree program, as well as Mathematics. Both of these degree programs combine a rich liberal arts education with a challenging curriculum emphasizing inquiry, analysis, and discovery.
Teaching is our primary emphasis. Students who choose to strive for an undergraduate Mathematics degree or a Biology degree benefit from a intimate learning environment that allows for significant personal contact with professors and numerous opportunities for:
- Specialized programs
- Research
- Internships
- Access to specialized training in areas environmental science, statistics, business, education, and medical sciences.
With a broad liberal arts education, coupled with experiential learning and practical training in mathematics and natural sciences, graduates of the department are well prepared for careers in business, health care, research, and education.

Prepare to be Challenged
Centenary's Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department offers a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Biology. Students enrolled in the Biology program may also take concentrations in Equine Science or Psychology.
Courses are offered on a four-credit system, allowing for:
- Longer class periods.
- More in-depth learning experiences.
- Greater opportunities to elect a double major or minor.

Teacher Certification
Teachers of Science and Mathematics are in high demand in our country today. Centenary College offers the means to combine your major interest with our Teacher Certification program.
Did you know that many students in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department combine their Mathematics or Biology degree with Teacher Certification in Elementary for Secondary Education?
All certifications programs are approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. Students interested in pursuing Teacher Certification must have a 2.75 GPA or higher and apply to the Education Department after their sophomore year.

Concentrations and Minors
As a Major in Biology and Mathematics, you may also explore our concentration in Environmental Science, and prepare for Graduate Studies.
Concentration in Environmental Science (for Biology Majors)
The concentration in Environmental Science is designed for Biology Majors who wish to expanded their studies in the area of Environmental Science. Students must complete courses in Environmentatl Science, Field Sampling Techniques, and Earth Science.
Minor in Biology
The Minor in Biology is designed for students interested in expanding their studies in the areas of the biological sciences. Students must complete courses in Biology of Plants and Cells, Biology of Animals, Basic Chemistry, Statistics I, and two Biology electives at the 2000 level or higher.

Minor in Environmental Science
The Minor in Environmental Science is designed for students who wish to expand their studies in the area of Environmental Science. Students must complete courses in Environmental Science, Field Sampling Techniques, Ecology, Statistics and two other elective courses from a designated list.
Minor in Mathematics
The Minor in Mathematics is designed for students interested in expanded studies in Mathematics. Students must complete courses in Calculus I & II, Statistics I or Statistics for the Social Sciences, and two Mathematics electives a the 3000 level or higher.

Professional Development Workshops for Science Teachers
Throughout the year, Centenary College organizes or sponsors a variety of events geared for science teachers from all grade levels, plus academic supervisors and administrators.
Centenary will sponsor "Star & Mars: An Exploration of the Cosmos" on Friday, April 24.
This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about Astronomy and how to present a number of interesting topics through various hands-on activities that can be used in your classroom. You will receive five professional development hours for the daytime session.
The optional evening session, to be held at the Jenny Jump State Forest Observatory, will provide you with three additional hours of professional development.
