Students seeking admission to the Education Department must have taken and successfully passed the three PRAXIS I exams, Mathematics, Reading and Writing, at the time an application is submitted to the Education Department.

Passing Score for each exam is a 173 if the student's weighted GPA* is less than 3.5. Passing score for applicants with a weighted GPA of 3.5 or above is 165 for each exam.

*Definition of "weighted GPA*": a weighted calculation of all courses ever completed on a college level from any institution of higher education, not just Centenary College.

The Praxis Series (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers)

Prior to Student Teaching, candidates must have passed the appropriate PRAXIS Examination(s). Elementary certification candidates in New Jersey take the PRAXIS II Exam (0014). Subject certification candidates are required to complete the appropriate PRAXIS II Subject Assessment/Specialty Area Test. Specific information on dates and locations of testing are available in the Education Office. It is the student's responsibility to complete and submit registration forms. Study guides for the Praxis Series are available through the bookstore.

Practicum and Student Teaching: Middle School Endorsements

All elementary education certification candidates seeking Elementary Education certification and a Middle School endorsement are required to pass all appropriate PRAXIS II exams before submission of the application for student teaching. Students seeking a Middle School endorsement will complete the Practicum experience in a Grade 1-5 setting and will complete the Student Teaching experience in an appropriate grade 5-8 setting.
