About the Program:
The Centenary College Learning and Technology Certificate Program is aimed at practicing K – 12 teachers. In this 15 credit program, you will take five three-credit courses. This certificate program will focus on practical applications of technologies to your classroom. In each class, you will work on projects that will help you incorporate technology into your lessons and prepare you be leaders, in your districts, on technology integration.
Cohort and Online Learning Methods:
You will join in a cohort of students and progress through the program together. All classes are online, asynchronous and accelerated, providing you with the flexibility to juggle the demands of teaching, extra-curricular responsibilities, mandated professional development, and family life.
Your learning outcomes are achieved through course work and learning experiences that are cohort based. As a member of a cohort, you will work with teachers in a collaborative way. Courses are designed around authentic project based activities, action research, and reflective practices. Each course has activities, strategies, and techniques that are immediately applicable to your classroom. As a result, you will be able to comfortably achieve your personal professional goals in a flexible, convenient, and practical online environment.
You will also be provided with a friendly introduction to online learning, your fellow cohort members, and your instructor prior to the beginning of the first course. You may be surprised to learn how easy and how much fun it is to learn online.

Course Descriptions:
Technology will be effectively integrated within the program experience through Internet-based discussion forums, e-mail, video conferencing and other appropriate online applications. Ultimately, this experience will serve to provide instruction and educational leadership that will best align to the critical needs of the 21st century learner. GED521 | Introduction to Educational Technology | 3 Credits | | This course will serve as an introduction to the field as a whole and help students gain an understanding of the breadth and numerous applications of educational technology. The course will include historical analysis of technology in education as well as a review of emerging technologies and their possible application to education. As a result of this course students will lay a foundation for their own philosophy of technology as it applies to both the pedagogy and integration of technology within the classroom. Students will demonstrate their competencies in the production of a final project a technology integrated unit plan.
As you are exposed to the content of this course you will be expected to combine this with your prior experiences and build upon your existing pedagogy to include technology and as an integrated piece of your desired student outcomes. You will be expected to be an active participant in the online learning community in pursuing your own specific interests in depth and supporting others in their project development by offering insights, ideas, and your unique skills.
Students will be expected to synthesize the course material and reflect upon their individual classroom practice as it relates to increasing student learning and performance with educational technology. Graduate level students/educators must be prepared to assume a greater leadership role within their school to provide both curricular and pedagogical leadership. | | GED522 | Technology & Ethics | 3 Credits | | This course will examine the impact that many forms of cyber technology have upon our foundations for social, legal, cultural, and moral systems. And, as we confront rapidly evolving forms of digital media and cyber technology, we also must understand how social policies and laws are developed in response to these technological developments. These issues extend far beyond the traditional boundaries of computer ethics or Internet ethics, especially as digital media users become familiar with the possibilities afforded by the convergence of information and communication technologies.
The challenge for educators is profound. While the issues of copyright, intellectual property, privacy, free speech, and ethically responsible behavior are acknowledged by educators, the imperative is to design learning environments around these issues as they appear in cyber technology so that educators will gain the experience, perspective and confidence they need in an educational environment increasingly shaped by immersive, convergent digital media technologies (Swain & Gilmore, 2001; Hannah & Matus, 1984) | | GED524 | Web Design for Teachers | 3 Credits | | Teachers have a long history of making use of minimal tools and making them work. The Internet bears witness to thousands of poorly designed web sites created by teachers who have not had the benefit of studying web site design and style. Many good resources and educational lessons have fallen victim to these poorly designed sites. In this class, educators will bring pedagogical foundations of instruction together with web development and design principles to develop a unit of instruction for their classes. | | GED525 | Audio and Video Production for the Classroom | 3 Credits | | Modern students often learn better through modern media. With the proliferation of easily accessible audio and video technologies, teachers can enrich their classrooms by incorporating podcasts, online video clips, and production activities that allow their students to actively engage in the process of learning about their world. | | GED526 | Digital Visual Imagery | 3 Credits | | Educators will learn how to effectively integrate many forms of digital visual imagery and select those best targeted to address the needs of students’ learning styles into their lesson plans. Digital visual imagery will become an integrated and effective part of their classroom instruction. The course will stress the practical application of digital visual imagery in the classroom. Graphics can help to address language and learning barriers and are often used to illustrate complex concepts. The role of graphics for critical thinking processes will be explored through research, writing, discussion, and student projects. Class discussions will include learning theories concerned with student motivation and memory such as Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory. Teachers can assist and enrich students’ learning by incorporating graphics into instructional activities that allow their students to more actively engage in the process of learning.
Students will be expected to design a formal instructional unit, using images that make good use of the Principles of Design. These principles will also reflect the Elements of Art. These projects will include critique of images following principles of visual literacy. The activity of critiquing projects promotes a reflective self assessment process. Students will achieve theoretical and technical skills in the final production of digital visual images as learning objects using various software platforms. | |
