What to Bring to Campus

When students go off to college for the first time there is a tendency to bring everything and the kitchen sink! This list will try to convince you that you don't need to bring everything, just what you need.

These are the items you definitely need to bring:

  • Extra long twin sheets, pillow, blankets, and comforter.
  • Alarm clock, lamp, flashlight and small trash can.
  • Plastic Bucket or tray for shampoo, soap, toothpaste and other toiletries.
  • Flip flops, a robe, towels, and washcloths.
  • Sewing kit.
  • Laundry bag/basket, detergent.
  • Iron and ironing board.
  • Band-aids, aspirin, allergy medicine.
  • Fan.
  • Umbrella.
  • Telephone.
  • Cleaning supplies.
  • Hangers.
  • Writable CD's.
  • Cat 5 Data Cable (available at any electronics store).

These are the kinds of things that might make your room feel more comfortable:

  • Pictures from home.
  • Refrigerator (no more than 4.4 cubic ft.).
  • Microwave or micro-fridge combo (call 800-525-7307 to rent).
  • Munchies.
  • Plates and utensils, a mug, and a can opener.
  • Popcorn.
  • Hanging shoe rack.
  • Shelves and/or crates.
  • Posters, double sided tape.
  • TV, VCR, CD's, appropriate sized stereo.
  • Folding camping furniture.
  • Plants.
  • Aquarium (10 gallon max.).
  • Address book.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Wet weather boots.
  • Computer printer (compatible with Centenary Laptop).
  • Curtains, drapes.

DO NOT BRING THESE THINGS. They are prohibited by Centenary:

  • Fire Hazard including but not limited to: Cables, Incense, Potpourri Warmers, Decorative Candles (lit or Unlit), Candle Warmers, Five Color Lamps (Medusa Lighting), Extension Cords (see handbook for types that maybe used), Halogen Lamps, Holiday Lights, Live Christmas Trees, and Live Wreaths.
  • Cooking Appliances including but not limiter to: Toaster ovens, hot plates, Foreman grills, Rice cookers, Burners, Electric Grills, Sandwich Makers, Crock Pots, Oil Popcorn Poppers, Griddles, Toasters.
  • Space Heaters (not supplied by school).
  • Air Conditioners.
  • Pets including, but not limited to: Dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, lizards, snakes, iguanas, frogs, turtles, mice, shellfish. Pets are NOT allowed inside the resident hall at any time for an length of time. The only pet allowed in the halls is fish in a ten gallon or less tank.
  • Ceiling fans.
  • Track lighting.
  • Charcoal or gas grill.
  • Weapons including but not limited to: Firearms, Ammunition, Air Pellet Guns, BB Guns, Swords, Sling Shots, Bows and Arrows, Paint Guns, Martial Arts Weaponry, Explosives, Fireworks including sparklers, Hunting Knives, and Pipes.
  • Illegal drugs.
  • Any display which advertises alcohol or drugs this includes but not limited to: Posters, Lighted Signs, Flags, Empty Alcohol Containers, and Blow-Up items.
  • Furniture not issued by the college this includes but is not limited to: Couches, Wooden or Upholstered furniture, Mattresses, Tables, and Futons.
  • Traffic signs or cones which belong to the college, state, or local highway departments and departments of public works.

Students with prohibited items in the Residence Hall rooms will be fined!
