![]() First Year Experience at Centenary CollegeBridging the Transition to CollegeEach September, our first year students enroll in a year-long program designed to bridge the transition from high school to college. Called the First Year Experience, it launches your life-long learning adventure at Centenary. Created by faculty and students, the First Year Experience ensures your first year at Centenary College is exciting and rewarding. You will build new friendships and learn more about yourself through special courses and memorable events. Your journey begins in the summer with an invitation to our Fresh Start Event. Fresh Start is an informative day-long session designed to get you and your parents ready for Centenary College. There you will meet your future classmates and professors, learn about our different campus services, and get ready for you life as a college student.
A Totally Wireless ExperienceThe courses are designed to coordinate with the Centenary Wireless Experience in which every full-time undergraduate student at Centenary receives a laptop computer connected to the college’s wireless network. This creates a new freedom so the learning experience is no longer confined to any particular location. Instead, students utilize a number of comfortable spaces such as our Front Parlours, Sunken Lounge, or our outdoor dining area to research topics, write papers, and catch up on their email. In addition Centenary College uses Blackboard, an online learning and community system. To access Blackboard, you log in using your Centenary College network ID and password. These are the same credentials you use to access your Centenary College email account. For example, if your name was John Smith your network ID would be smithj. Specially Trained FacultyOur creative faculty delivers innovative, interdisciplinary freshmen courses that fuse new ideas and Internet technology into a lively learning process. Take Professor Schomaker, who teaches the First Year course 'Culture and Business'. He uses the study of different cultures to help his students develop critical thinking, analytic skills, and unique learning styles. “The ability to use this technology to communicate allows thoughtful or shy students to join faster thinking, extroverted students to share ideas on a more even playing field.” Small classesWith a student to teacher ratio of 16:1 classes are small, with seminars and meetings in dorms and lounges that complement your classroom studies. Being a first year student at Centenary means being involved in your major and picking the First Year Experience class you want to take. Eighteen are offered, ranging from “The History of Warfare,” to “The Sociology of Reality TV,” to “The Simpsons: An American Family”. Your professor for this class will also be your academic advisor for your first year.
