133nd Commencement - Saturday, May 17, 2008.

The 133rd Commencement of Centenary College will be held on the Smith Lawn in front to the Seay Administration Building, Main Campus, Hackettstown on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

The ceremony will begin at 1:00pm.

Visitors and guests are encouraged to arrive early. Parking is available in Founders Parking lot at the rear of the campus. Street parking is also available.

Our Commencement Speaker:

Centenary College is pleased to announce that Joan Hamburg, host of WOR Radio 710 HD’s 'The Joan Hamburg Show', will be the keynote speaker for our 133rd May Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 17, 2008.

Joan Hamburg has been a New York journalist and broadcaster for over 30 years, covering topics such as medical advances, family and career, as well as theatre and restaurant reviews.

Joan Hamburg is the author of several books, including:

  • Our Little Black Book of Shopping Secrets.
  • New York on $5 a Day (series).
  • City Wedding.

She has received the honor of many awards, including:

  • Anti-Defamation League’s Woman of the Year         
  • Mirabella Magazine’s Outstanding American Woman
  • National Mother of the Year
  • Gabriel Award for Excellence in Broadcasting
  • National Council of Churches Award
  • The New York State Broadcasters’ Association’s Broadcaster of the Year Award
  • The Daughters of the American Revolution’s Achievement Award
  • 2006 Matrix Award for Excellence in Radio Broadcasting

Saturday, May 17, 2008

9:00 a.m.:  Baccalaureate. Folkner Family Gymnasium, Reeves Student Center Lobby.

10 to 11:30 a.m.:  Commencement Brunch*. Formal Dining Room, Seay Building.

*Brunch tickets will be available for sale from the Receptionist in the Seay Building from April 23 through May 16.  Pre-sale tickets will be $9/adult and $5/child.  Tickets at the door will be $11 for each adult or child.

*If you prefer, simple box lunches and light alternatives will be available for sale on the Reeves Hall Lawn in Front of the Seay Building, with a limited number of tables and chairs available.

12:00 p.m.:  Robing and Lineup. The Quad behind the Seay Building (signs for lineup order by degree will be posted.)

1:00 p.m.:  Processional. Beginning in the Quad.

Commencement Information:

Cap and Gown
The Commencement regalia does not need to be returned; it is for the graduate to keep as a memento of the day. The Alumni Association suggests you keep your regalia for participation in future events.

Diplomas
Diplomas will be mailed to graduates from the Registrar’s within two weeks following the Commencement Ceremony.

Main Parking
Please park in the lots located at the back of the campus.  There will be signs and parking attendants to assist with parking.  There is limited parking on the street.  Hackettstown parking regulations apply to street parking; the Hackettstown Police Department strictly enforce parking regulations.  Parking signs should be respected.

Handicapped Parking Accommodations  
Special accommodations may be made for disabled guests.  Students and/or families needing special accommodations are asked to notify the Office of Student Services at lentzm@centenarycollege.edu or 908-979-4291 prior to the day of the ceremony.  Please provide the make, color, and license plate number of the car.

Yellow Striped Fire Lanes
Fire lanes are located throughout the campus.  These areas must be kept open at all times. 

Commencement Processional
Robing begins at 12 noon.  The Procession will begin at 1 pm, starting from the Quad behind the Seay Building.  

Guest Admission
There is limited seating for Commencement.  Please tell your guests to arrive early.  Guests may bring lawn chairs for additional seating.

Severe Weather
In the event of severe weather, the ceremony will be held in the Folkner Family Gymnasium of the Reeves Student Center. TICKETS ARE REQUIRED. Two tickets will be issued to each graduate.  There are NO additional tickets.

Video Feed
A live video feed will be shown at locations on campus for additional guests.

Commencement Instructions:

  • Graduates will be lined up in alphabetical order by degree and should not change position once lined up.
  • During the line-up process, cards will be given to the graduates with their names.  The cards must be presented to the reader during the ceremony.  No changes may be made to the cards.  (Graduates with names that are difficult to pronounce may write their names phonetically.)
  • An orderly procession will honor the graduates and their guests.
  • Participants are expected to stay until the conclusion of the ceremony.
  • Ushers will direct graduates to their seats.
  • Following the Commencement address, ushers will direct graduates to the stage.  When the name is read, a diploma cover will be presented to the graduate.
  • At the conclusion of the ceremony, there will be a Recessional.  Ushers will be present to direct the graduates.

Please do not leave personal belongings unattended during the ceremony.
