One soul, who touched so many.
A young man with a heart as big as the world who fought a battle like no other and in his time reached out to us all.
On February 17th we told you about how the Centenary College Community was banding together to help David Heard reach his goal of placing one Japanese Crane mobile in every pediatric hospital in the nation. Read about it here

We wanted to collect 1000 cranes in an effort to assist him and we could not be more proud of the results. The Centenary Community, both those on Campus and those from afar, were able to create 2000 cranes!
That is two whole mobiles made in one night!!
To everyone who contributed: Thank you; you are the reason Centenary College is such an amazing place.
There are more events planned for March and April!
Join us, in keeping David’s dream alive! No prior knowledge of crane folding is necessary. There are step by step instructions here:
just get a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 inch square piece of paper and get folding!
If you wish to contribute please fold some cranes and mail them to:

Centenary College will be hosting a Crane Folding party in remembrance of David Heard, son of Susan Heard, Director of Marketing & Undergraduate Enrollment Operations.
On Wednesday, February 23rd from 9:30pm – 12am, in The SAC, our goal is to make 1000 cranes to help David’s dream of making 220,000 cranes, to build mobiles to put into every pediatric center in the country.
David got the idea to fold paper cranes after seeing a Lafayette student’s performance of the play “A Thousand Cranes”, which is based on the true story of a 12-year-old girl in Japan, who developed leukemia after the atomic bombing in her hometown of Hiroshima in World War II. According to Japanese legend, anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will get one wish. Hoping to regain her health, she started folding but died before making a full set.
David was diagnosed two years ago with stage IV neuroblastoma , a rare often deadly cancer of the nervous system that strikes about 750 students a year. After valiant fight David passed away Thursday February 10th.
However David’s legacy still continues to live on. To date David has gather about 70,000 cranes and cranes from all over the country continue to come in!
Help us keep David’s dream alive by joining us on the 23rd to fold cranes! No prior knowledge of crane folding is necessary. Just come out bring some friends and get ready to fold.
If you cannot make it to the event but would still like to donate cranes contact Teresa Miley at

Help Is On The Way!

The movement from email to my.centenarycollege has created opportunities with which we are still attempting to cope.

Help is here!

Every Wednesday at 3:00 pm, every person necessary to help you schedule an event or meeting will physically be in the SAC for half an hour. At that weekly meeting, you will get help in

getting your event on the calendar,

booking a room and negotiating set-up logistics,

getting a poster approved and moved into the print queue,

scheduling security if necessary,

creating and uploading an article for news and announcements,

perhaps receiving SGA funding,

learning of other events on that same day and time.

These will not be opportunities to dream, brainstorm. advocate or critique. These will be quickly moving meetings with very little discussion or debate. (We'll schedule the dreaming and debating for another time.) This semester, events at the same time may be questioned but will not be prohibited.
If possible, please come with a

fully charged laptop

enticing (and spell checked!!!) description of your event on your hard drive or a jump stick

jpeg related to the event if you've got one (PG rated. No naughty bits!)

For more information, please email Ashley Burger (
)
The staff of the Division of Student Engagement will always be ready to assist good people in the implementation of cool stuff. However, we will be able to give our focused, enthusiastic and undivided attention to you at these times in a way that we are not able to do throughout out the week in our offices.

Advertising 101....

Have an event you want to make known to the campus community?
Are you a student, faculty or staff member?
Here is your simple guide to posting your advertisements around the campus community.
1. All posters must have a stamp of approval by the Office of Student Engagement and Services (Elba Young).

NOTE: Any advertisement that is posted without a stamp will be removed immediately and discarded.
2. Postings are NOT permitted on windows or glass doors.

Postings are permitted in bathrooms, hallways, and lounges, provided no damage will result from the posting in all buildings and residence halls with the exception of the Lackland Center.
3. Be friendly to your fellow advertisers, posting on top of other postings is prohibited.
4. Limit your posting, leave room for fellow advertisers.
5. All expenses for posters will be paid by the responsible organization/group, including paper, duplication costs, tape, staples, etc.
* Looking for new advertising ideas... ask a Student Activities member for new and innovative to advertise outside of the plain ol' flyer.
Approval of Posting
Prior to printing make sure you have the following on your advertisements. In order to be approved the following regulations must be met.
The poster must clearly state the following information:

1. Event Date & Time
2. Event Host (your club, organization or department)
3. Event Location
4. Contact Information, including name and phone number/email address
5. Proper use of grammar and spelling

Dorm Wars 2010 Places

Starting at 1pm Sunday, residents and commuters, friends and family gathered in the Quad to begin the traditional dorm wars challenges. Green, Yellow, Black, Blue, Orange, and Red declared war and battled until the last group was standing.
Starting the day with a knock in the head, each team battled in the arena to wreck one another in the Wrecking Ball Challenge. Later, testing their teamwork abilities travelled the Quad on 8 footer in a Team Ski Walk. Moving on to a skill used every day, each team was challenged to test their brain skills and word knowledge to complete a sporcle word ladder challenge.

The best time then won the "Minute to Win It" style relay, testing their cup staking, tic tac toe and whippersnapper skills. We can not forget the humorous experience ending this relay called "How's it Hanging" as two players from each team was challenged to move an orange each, into a hula hoop using only the banana that hung from their waists.
Lastly, as the crowd started to die down the last 8 players battled each other in a raindrop relay, seeing who could fill their bucket the fastest after passing a raining bag over their heads.
With pride, determination and spirit the teams were neck and neck but only Reeves Hall could walk away Champs for this 2010 Dorm Wars!
Congratulations to all those who came out and to Reeves Hall for taking home the victory.
