One soul, who touched so many.
A young man with a heart as big as the world who fought a battle like no other and in his time reached out to us all.
On February 17th we told you about how the Centenary College Community was banding together to help David Heard reach his goal of placing one Japanese Crane mobile in every pediatric hospital in the nation. Read about it here

We wanted to collect 1000 cranes in an effort to assist him and we could not be more proud of the results. The Centenary Community, both those on Campus and those from afar, were able to create 2000 cranes!
That is two whole mobiles made in one night!!
To everyone who contributed: Thank you; you are the reason Centenary College is such an amazing place.
There are more events planned for March and April!
Join us, in keeping David’s dream alive! No prior knowledge of crane folding is necessary. There are step by step instructions here:
just get a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 inch square piece of paper and get folding!
If you wish to contribute please fold some cranes and mail them to:

Centenary College will be hosting a Crane Folding party in remembrance of David Heard, son of Susan Heard, Director of Marketing & Undergraduate Enrollment Operations.
On Wednesday, February 23rd from 9:30pm – 12am, in The SAC, our goal is to make 1000 cranes to help David’s dream of making 220,000 cranes, to build mobiles to put into every pediatric center in the country.
David got the idea to fold paper cranes after seeing a Lafayette student’s performance of the play “A Thousand Cranes”, which is based on the true story of a 12-year-old girl in Japan, who developed leukemia after the atomic bombing in her hometown of Hiroshima in World War II. According to Japanese legend, anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will get one wish. Hoping to regain her health, she started folding but died before making a full set.
David was diagnosed two years ago with stage IV neuroblastoma , a rare often deadly cancer of the nervous system that strikes about 750 students a year. After valiant fight David passed away Thursday February 10th.
However David’s legacy still continues to live on. To date David has gather about 70,000 cranes and cranes from all over the country continue to come in!
Help us keep David’s dream alive by joining us on the 23rd to fold cranes! No prior knowledge of crane folding is necessary. Just come out bring some friends and get ready to fold.
If you cannot make it to the event but would still like to donate cranes contact Teresa Miley at

Hackettstown, N.J., February 7, 2011 – Centenary College is relocating its Metro Park Learning Center from 101 Wood Avenue South, 6th Floor, Iselin, N.J., to 333 Thornall Street, Edison, N.J. as of February 14, 2011.

Centenary College has offered accelerated A.A., B.S. and M.B.A. degrees through its Centenary Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS) program in the Metro Park area since 2005 to better serve professionals in Central New Jersey. In addition, the Metro Park site has recently started offering students the option to pursue an accelerated master’s degree in Leadership and Public Administration, as well as an accelerated bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice.
Launched in 1999, CAPS provides a unique format for working adults that enables them to complete their college degrees in less time than traditional programs. Intensive in nature, CAPS classes meet one day a week with study group participation on a weekly basis. The curriculum combines theory and practical experience and classes are in session year-round. To date, over 2000 individuals are CAPS graduates.
The new location affords the College more classroom space, plus offers the institution a more recognizable location with a Centenary street monument sign with the College logo located by the Center.
In addition to the Metro Park Learning Center, CAPS is offered on Centenary’s Hackettstown campus, the Parsippany Learning Center and various corporate sites throughout New Jersey.
“This is yet another important opportunity to better serve our current and future students,” says Diane Finnan, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Strategic Branding. “Since we opened the Metro Park site six years ago, we have been able to effectively serve the educational needs of professionals in that area. This new location will enable us to continue to be an attractive educational option for those interested in excelling in their careers.”
Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, Centenary College is an independent, coeducational liberal arts and career studies college distinguished by an accomplished faculty, small class size and diverse student body. Centenary is the only baccalaureate and master’s degree granting institution in northwest New Jersey.
Centenary College’s main campus is located in Hackettstown, N.J., with its equestrian facility in Washington Township (Morris County). The College’s Center for Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS) offers accelerated degree completion programs in Parsippany, with an additional facility in Iselin, and at corporate sites throughout New Jersey.
