SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - On Sunday afternoon, Centenary senior Jelena Markovic (Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Economic School) was given one of the most prestigious honors a female student-athlete can receive in the state of New Jersey, being named as a 2012-13 N.J.A.I.A.W. Woman of the Year recipient.
Each year, the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) recognizes outstanding achievements by female student-athletes across the state. In honor of the award, the NJAIAW hosts the Woman of the Year Luncheon in celebration of National Girls and Woman in Sports Day. This year’s national theme is “Girls in Sports, An Investment in the Future" and a luncheon for the event was held at Seton Hall University in honor of all recipients.
Following the luncheon, Markovic and all of the other NJAIAW Woman of the Year recipients gathered together at halftime of the Seton Hall University vs. Rutgers University women's basketball game to be honored in front of a full crowd in the Richie Regan Recreation Center.
Aside from her tremendous performance on the court this season where she finished ranked top of the nation in aces per set for the second consecutive year (1.13), Markovic serves as a resident assistant (RA) at the college where she helps guide residents in their every day life on campus at the college.
Follow the Cyclones on Facebook at
and on Twitter at
to keep up with the latest Cyclone news!

Hackettstown — About 15 students and staff gathered in the Student Activities Center today with construction paper, markers and stickers. They quickly set to work offering whatever words of encouragement they could to the students, staff and families affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting last month.
“It’s important that when things go on, people remember what it means to be a part of a nation or a part of a community," said Hall Director Ayannah Johnson.
Lizeth Jaramillo, a resident director at the college, wrote a letter to the staff and faculty at Sandy Hook: “Centenary College community sends our prayers, positivity and love. During our week of service we have dedicated a program to send your community messages of hope and inspiration.”
Another letter addressed to a Sandy Hook student is intended to comfort the student during the difficult time following the loss of classmates.
Andrew Sarmiento said he was there to show his support, especially for the teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary. “I feel like they’re a big part of it,” he said.
The group made about 50 cards that will be sent to Sandy Hook Elementary.
The event is part of the college’s “week of service” that began today with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. As the week progresses, students will donate dental care products to Project Dental Africa, a program that emphasizes the importance of good dental hygiene in Africa. They will also hold a food and clothing drive for families affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Community members who would like to donate can contact

Hackettstown, N.J. –The School of International Programs of Centenary College is hosting its first Korean Teacher Winter Program for thirteen public school teachers from South Korea from now through late February. This three-month program was made possible through a grant from the South Korean government.
The emphasis of this initiative for the first two months of study is to provide the thirteen Korean teachers of English with advanced writing techniques and skills, as well as providing them with tools to improve their English pronunciation. During the last month nine teachers will continue with these studies, while four of the teachers will focus on the experiential learning techniques through a partnership with the Hackettstown Middle School. Those four teachers will work with all content areas in grades 5 through 8 at the Middle School to learn about American public school teaching methodologies.

“This will be an enriching and educational experience for both students and teachers,” says Marie Griffin, Principal of Hackettstown Middle School.

The program is coordinated through ITTI Global, Inc. in Seoul, Korea, who first worked with Centenary College last summer to design a four week Korean Teacher Summer Program in conjunction with the Korean government. That program focused on intermediate English reading, writing and speaking skills.
“I am so pleased that Centenary has been selected as a site to run this program,” says Dr. Joseph Linskey, Dean of the School of International Programs at Centenary College. “It is a win-win situation for all involved and I would like to also thank Ms. Marie Griffin, the Principal of Hackettstown Middle School, for working with us on this initiative.”
Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, Centenary
College is an independent, coeducational liberal arts and career studies college
distinguished by an accomplished faculty, small class size and diverse student body. Centenary is the only baccalaureate and master’s degree granting institution in northwest
New Jersey.
Centenary College’s main campus is located in Hackettstown, N.J., with its equestrian facility in Washington Township (Morris County). The Centenary College School of Professional Studies program offers accelerated degree completion programs in Parsippany, with an additional facility in Edison, and at corporate sites throughout New Jersey.

Hackettstown, N.J. – Centenary College is pleased to announce that Dr. James Patterson, Chief Academic Officer and Provost, is one of 20 senior-level administrators in higher education nationwide selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI) to participate in a year-long Executive Leadership Academy. He is also the only administrator from a New Jersey college or university to be selected for this program.
Individuals chosen for the program are vice presidents or cabinet officers in higher education who aspire to the presidency of an independent college or university. As a participant, Dr. Patterson will attend two seminars and ongoing webinars, participate in a mentoring program, develop experiential learning projects focused on specific areas of presidential responsibility and complete a series of readings and case studies.
“The Academy will help prepare CAOs to serve as effective college presidents,” says Richard Ekman, President of the Council of Independent Colleges. “Competition for available places in the Academy was intense, and the review committee found the nomination materials to be most impressive. We believe that Dr. James Patterson has the potential for highly effective leadership as a college or university president.”
Dr. Patterson earned a Ph.D. in British and Irish History from Fordham University. The research for his dissertation was conducted in Ireland on a Fulbright Fellowship. In 2008, Manchester University Press published his book In the Wake of the Great Rebellion: Republicanism, Agrarianism and Banditry in Ireland after 1798; which has been warmly reviewed and was recently re-issued in paperback. He has also published well-received articles and regularly presents papers at conferences and seminars in Ireland, England and the United States (including two at Harvard University’s International Seminar on the History of the Atlantic World and one at the Folger Shakespeare Institute).
“We are so pleased that Dr. Patterson has been selected to participate in the prestigious Executive Leadership Academy being presented by CIC and AALI,” Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, President of Centenary College. “His leadership has been instrumental to the advancement of the institution and we are honored that he has been selected for this prestigious opportunity.”

Hackettstown, N.J. – Matt Marciano, a Centenary College alumnus and Long Valley Middle School teacher, emphasizes the importance of “paying it forward” with his students.
The concept of “paying it forward,” which is the idea of having a good deed be repaid by helping others became popular after the 2000 movie “Pay It Forward,” which focused on this philosophy, was released. For the third year in a row, Marciano, who graduated from Centenary with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership in 2009, is having his sixth grade Social Studies classes complete various projects to improve their community in various ways by completing a “Change the World” project. Some examples of projects include running a soccer clinic for students who have cerebral palsy, implementing a local recycling program, setting up a scholarship in honor of a deceased family member, making teddy bears for battered women, establishing a pet therapy program in a local nursing home, helping a homeless family in Passaic County and donating flowers arrangements to individuals who belong to the Long Valley Senior Citizens Club.

He added a new twist to the assignment this year by offering the project to the parents of his students. About 15 parents decided that they wanted to establish their own “Pay it Forward” campaign under his direction. Some of the parent projects included 100 acts of kindness between September through June and volunteering for the Market Street Mission in Morristown.
“This project has taken on a life of its own,” says Marciano. “It is such an accomplishment to be able to motivate individuals in this manner and see what a positive difference each individual can have and see what an impact they are making on other people’s lives.”
