ITHACA, N.Y. (May 13, 2011) – The Centenary softball team’s 2011 season came to an end in the NCAA...

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 13, 2011) – The Centenary softball team’s 2011 season came to an end in the NCAA Tournament, as the seventh-seeded Lady Cyclones fell to third-seed Middlebury, 9-1, Friday in Ithaca, N.Y. With the loss, CC finishes its campaign with a 29-13 record. Middlebury (30-7) staves off elimination and will face St. John Fisher on Saturday.

Both teams were looking for their first-ever NCAA Tournament win. An early Centenary error helped MC load the bases in the top of the first, and with two outs, Emily Burbridge brought everyone home with a grand slam over the left field fence.

Centenary had a chance to cut into the lead in the third after senior Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) led off the inning with a double. She was sacrificed to third by junior Jessica Fane (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) and sophomore Jennifer Ciecwisz (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) came in as a pinch runner. However, the Cyclones left the runner on third as MC got out of the inning.

In the fourth, junior Jen Vasta (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) and sophomore Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) singled to put two on with nobody out. After MC was able to get two outs, senior Nicole Fleming (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) brought Vasta home with an RBI single. But Middlebury escaped without further damage.

The Panthers then added three in the fifth and one apiece in the sixth and seventh to win, 9-1. Senior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) got the start and struck out five over 4.1 innings while suffering the loss. Freshman Meagan Madsen (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) pitched 2.2 innings to close out the game.

Today marked the final game in a Centenary uniform for four Cyclone seniors, Durborow, Fleming, Knapp and Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII).

Centenary set a program-record with 19 conference victories in 2011 and won the program’s first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship to earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. The team returns most of its lineup, including Montferrat, who earned First Team All-CSAC, CSAC Player of the Year and CSAC Tournament MVP honors, as well as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-East-Region. Junior Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) also took home First Team All-CSAC and NFCA First Team All-East-Region accolades.

DRIFTON, Pa. (May 7, 2011) – Senior Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII) hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded to score Jen Vasta (Boonton, N.J./Boonton), capping a wild 12-11 win over top seed and three-time defending champion Neumann as the Centenary softball team won the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament for the first time in school history to earn the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, Saturday at the Drifton Sport Complex in Drifton, Pa. Sophomore catcher Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) was named Tournament MVP.

Centenary won both of its games on Friday, defeating Immaculata, 4-1, and Marywood, 4-3 in eight innings. After Neumann dispatched Marywood in the first game on Saturday, 10-0 in six innings, the Knights handed CC its first CSAC Tournament loss, 10-2 in five innings, setting up a winner-take-all game for the Championship.

The Lady Cyclones found themselves trailing 2-0 after the top of the first inning. Weather then delayed the game almost three hours, and when the two teams got back on the field Centenary got on the board thanks to an RBI single by senior Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery), scoring fellow classmate Nicole Fleming (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills Regional). But Neumann seemingly took control of the game with five runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Montferrat crushed a ball to deep right field for a solo shot, her 10th of the season. Freshman Katie Ciecwisz (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) and Olsen each singled and Ciecwisz came home on an error by Neumann’s first baseman. But the Knights were able to get out of the inning without further damage. In the next inning, however, junior Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) hit a two-run bomb to left field, scoring junior Gabrielle Pellegrino (Jersey City, N.J./Holy Family Academy), and Olsen hit an RBI single to score Vasta, cutting NU’s lead to 7-6.

But the Knights bounced back, scoring two in the top of the fifth to increase their advantage to 9-6. After two scoreless frames, Centenary’s bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth. The Cyclones loaded the bases and Ciecwisz brought Veverka and Vasta home with a two-RBI single. Fleming then plated Montferrat and Ciecwisz scored on the play on another NU error. Knapp added another run with an RBI double as CC built an 11-9 lead heading to the top of the seventh.

Neumann was down but not out, however, as the Knights scrapped out two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, setting up Olsen’s heroics as Centenary won the CSAC Tournament. Senior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and freshman Meagan Madsen (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) each pitched for the Cyclones as Madsen recorded her 14th win of the year.

“What an unbelievable game,” said head coach Kim Broking. “I never doubted that we would come back. I knew we were going to win. I knew even when we were down 7-1. I knew we would score in the seventh, especially with Sarah at the plate and Jen at third base. I am so proud of the girls for how they have competed not only in the CSAC Tournament, but all season long.”

Montferrat was named the Tournament MVP after batting .545 (6-for-11) with three walks, five runs, two doubles, two home runs and three RBI in CC’s four games.

“When Cara is up, you know she is getting on base,” said Broking. “She gets the job done, whether it’s a home run or a walk or single to keep an inning going. She had an amazing regular season and an even better tournament.”

Centenary will find out who and where it will be playing in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 9.

The Cyclones defeated Immaculata, 4-1, in their first game of the day.

Prior to facing Centenary, the Pacers took down Neumann, 5-3. The Knights sent the Mighty Macs home with an 8-5 in the first elimination contest.

In the battle of winning teams, sophomore Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) gave CC a 1-0 lead with a blast over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the first inning. But MU answered with a home run of its own in the second inning, a two-run shot by Ashley Dommes, and the Pacers added a run in the fifth to take a 3-1 edge.

In the bottom of the fifth, Centenary loaded the bases and freshman Katie Ciecwisz (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) drove in junior Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. But Marywood was able to get out of the inning without further damage. In the bottom of the seventh, trailing 3-2, Montferrat doubled with one out. The next batter, Ciecwisz, grounded out to third. On the play, Montferrat took off for third base and Pacers first baseman Alexandra Stine’s throw went over the head of the third baseman Dommes, allowing Montferrat to cross the plate with the tying score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Knapp and junior Gabrielle Pellegrino (Jersey City, N.J./Holy Family Academy) each reached base and advanced to third and second, respectively, on another MU error. The next batter was Veverka, and her single up the middle plated Knapp and gave Centenary the 4-3 victory, the team’s first walkoff win since April 10, 2010, against Immaculata. Freshman Meagan Madsen (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) came on in relief and held Marywood to just two hits over the final 2.1 innings to get the victory on Friday.

In Centenary’s first game, Veverka crushed a solo home run and Montferrat hit an RBI double as the Cyclones scored three in the fifth inning before holding on to win, 4-1. Senior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) started and struck out five over four innings to get the victory and Madsen threw three innings of two-hit ball to get the save.

Marywood and Neumann will play the tournament’s second elimination game on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The winner of that game will face the Cyclones at noon. With a victory, Centenary can win the CSAC and earn its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. Durborow has 39 strikeouts in her last three starts, all complete game wins. Centenary did cross the plate three more times, all in the fifth inning, thanks to a two-RBI single by freshman Katie Ciecwisz (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) and a run-scoring single by senior Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII).

In the second game, the Lady Cyclones scored four runs in the second inning thanks to four errors by the Giants.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (April 26, 2011) – Senior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) struck out a career-high 15 opponents to guide the Centenary softball team (23-8, 16-3 CSAC) to a 4-1 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Baptist Bible (20-10, 13-7 CSAC), Tuesday at Legion Field in Hackettstown, N.J. The victory helped the Cyclones salvage a split in the double-header, as they lost the first contest, 3-1.

Prior to the game, the team honored its four seniors, Durborow, Nicole Fleming (Oxford, N.J./ Warren Hills Regional), Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII).

Durborow’s strikeout total is the second-highest in Centenary history and the most since Jess Guidi tallied 18 on April 19, 2004. She gave up just five hits and one run, on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Durborow struck out the side on four different occasions, including the seventh inning to close the door on the Defenders.

Sophomore catcher Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) gave her pitcher the run support she needed, with two RBI triples in the contest, each scoring junior Jen Vasta (Boonton, N.J./Boonton). Montferrat also scored twice herself, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Knapp in the fourth and an RBI single by freshman Katie Ciecwisz (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) in the sixth. Durborow did the rest to give Centenary the win.

In the first game, CC scrapped out a run in the second inning when Fleming grounded out to second to score Ciecwisz. That score held until the top of the seventh, when BBC loaded the bases with nobody out. Katelin Broughton hit a two-RBI double and then scored herself to give the Defenders a two-run cushion, and they went on to win, 3-1. Freshman Meagan Madsen (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) went the distance in the loss.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, April 30, with a road CSAC contest at Keystone at 1:00 p.m. The Cyclones can clinch the second-seed in the conference tournament with a sweep of the Giants.
