Located in SEAY 019 (former Tilly's), the Writing Collaboratory offers free 30-minute peer-to-peer consultations on ANY type of written communication in EVERY field of study at the College. Consultants work with students at any stage of the writing process from brainstorming to final drafts.
All selected consultants are highly trained as a result of taking an intensive 16-week course where they become familiar with the theoretical aspects of Writing Center pedagogy and writing instruction. The Collaboratory provides a welcoming environment where students can interact with their fellow peers about strategies on becoming stronger and more effective writers. Our philosophy is based on the idea that creating better writers is a collaborative effort. We encourage students to come prepared to have insightful discussions with consultants about ways they can improve as writers, not just for a given assignment. In addition to collaborative writing instruction, the lab has a reference library where students can take advantage of writing handbooks or documentation guides, such as MLA and APA. The lab also has several computers that students may use to check email or work on assignments. There is a lounge area where students can take advantage of a quiet environment conducive for reading or taking well-deserved breaks in between classes. The lab has a coffee machine, refrigerator, and animal crackers as a snack for writers on the go. There is also a space for in-lab workshops, which will be available for students, faculty and staff throughout the College. All workshops will be run by our trained student consultants.We encourage students to take advantage of this resource throughout their entire time on campus because we believe that creating better writers requires an ongoing commitment. Students can call to make an appointment or come by to speak with our friendly front-desk staff, who are also students at the College. Students can also have drop-in appointments. The Academic Success Center is launching a Math and Writing Lab on Monday, February 7, 2011.

The Math Lab and Writing Lab is a drop in tutoring service taking place in the HUB located in the lower level of the Seay Building every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4PM-6PM.

Staffing the Math Lab will be Cindy Case, who is a Math/Science tutor for us, a lab assistant in the science department, and adjunct in the Math department.

Staffing the Writing Lab on Mondays and Wednesdays is Abbie Davis.  She is a tutor with Level I & II CRLA certification who has worked for us for almost three years and is completing her Masters degree in English at Montclair State University.

Gabrielle Nickas will staff the Writing Lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  She is a tutor for us and an adjunct at Middlesex Community College and Brookdale Community College teaching writing.  She has her Masters in Communication and worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Writing Center at Monmouth University.

This service will be of particular interest to students enrolled in College Math, Quantitative Literacy, College English, and Composition and Rhetoric.

This will also be helpful to students with any phase of writing projects.

Time Management (September 15 or September 16, 2010)

The student will be introduced to techniques to become aware of how they use their time, strategies to make realistic schedules, and plans to accomplish what they need to do to meet their academic and life goals. 

Note Taking (September 29 or September 30, 2010)

The student will be introduced to several note-taking methods including running text, informal outline, formal outline, and the Cornell method.  Also discussed will be preparing to take notes, listening cues, and post class reviewing strategies.

Getting the Most Out of Your Textbooks (October 20 or October 21, 2010)

Students will be introduced to a hands-on approach of Textmapping introduced by David Middlebrook to understand how to take apart a text for better understanding of the material.

Student Professionalism (November 17 or November 18, 2010)

Students will be introduced to professional behavior guidelines both inside and out of the classroom.  Attendance, attitude, commitment, and classroom interaction will be the focus of the workshop.  Professionalism for post graduation employment will be reviewed.

Taking Charge of Your Education (December 1 or December 2, 2010)

Students will be introduced to obligations and options they have in managing their education.  An emphasis on the educational resources and policies at Centenary will be covered.
