Fall in love with 'Bad Dates' in Hackettstown

Liz McConahay in BAD DATES

Pick a date between now and March 6 and head to Hackettstown, where "Bad Dates'' is a good bet to make a lasting impression.
Even better, its cast, which begins and ends with Liz McConahay Wanfried, will dazzle you with a hyperkinetic performance that might leave you breathless.

Talking faster than a teenager on a Red Bull bender, Wanfried, a Broadway veteran, is tearing through Centenary Stage Company's production of Theresa Rebeck's wickedly funny one-woman show.

Wanfried's energetic delivery, mostly aimed directly at the audience, is worth the price of admission by itself. Her stream of consciousness is more of a raging river, starting some sentences before the last one is finished. She rarely stops, even when she's brushing her teeth or sticking her head under the bed. That she builds a fascinating and sympathetic character adds to the value of this 90-minute, no-intermission visit.

That Rebeck doesn't stop at character, and gives us an occasionally thrilling subplot, makes it easy work to recommend "Bad Dates'' as a clear highlight of the 2011 theater season in Northern New Jersey.

Wanfried wears the shoes of Haley Walker, who leaves her no-good excuse for a husband (He traded their Toyota for three pounds of marijuana) in Texas to seek a better life in New York City. With her 13-year-old daughter (who we never see) in tow, she quickly stumbles into success.

At first, she's alarmed to discover the restaurant that hired her as a waitress is a front for the "Romanian Mafia'' (her words, not ours). But when the mobsters are busted, she takes over as manager and discovers "I'm some sort of restaurant idiot savant.''

After giving the restaurant a quick makeover, and stealing the executive chef from a competitor, the joint gets a top rating from The New York Times and begins to attract a celebrity clientele.

She relates this to her audience in a friendly manner from her bedroom, which is tastefully appointed but cluttered with hundreds of shoes. Shoes in boxes, on top of boxes, under the bed, spilling out of the closet, sprouting like leaves from shoe trees.
There's a shoe metaphor in there somewhere, which you can interpret for yourself. Rebeck seems to be making a statement about obsession. Haley also notes how good a hot pair of shoes can make you feel, even when wearing a particular pair "is a little like having your foot stuck in a bear trap.''

Talk of shoes, though, gives way to Haley's rekindled dating life. Her status at the
restaurant is drawing men like moths to a flame, but her job leaves little time for dating, "which makes them want me even more,'' she tells us with a mix of irony and delight in her voice.

A parallel to "Mildred Pierce'' turns her away from a seemingly perfect guy.

"I'm really attracted to this guy, I mean, whatever,'' she declares in a manner that had every woman in the audience nodding like they understood her perfectly.

Rebeck continues to connect with her female fans as Haley shares her frequently outrageous dating disasters, including one man who is preoccupied with his cholesterol and colon.

"I will spare you the details, although he did not,'' she dishes.

The fun and games take a dark turn, but this is to be expected from Rebeck, who has extensive experience writing TV crime dramas, including episodes of "NYPD Blue'' and "Law and Order: Criminal Intent.'' "Bad Dates,'' in fact, easily could have been adapted to that genre, but Rebeck does not spoil the fun by sending us home without a few more laughs.

Director Carl Wallnau keeps his star on the move, rummaging through shoes and constantly changing clothes, so there is a sense of action onstage. Bob Phillips' set design is a gloriously detailed mess that helps to shrink the big Sitnick Theatre stage down to a reasonably intimate level.

Cheesy cha-cha music between the occasional set change (more likely, just a few necessary opportunities for Wanfried to grab a drink and a throat lozenge) adds to the quirky mood of this deliciously edgy affair.
