The Writing Collaboratory

Located in SEAY 019 (former Tilly's), the Writing Collaboratory offers free 30-minute peer-to-peer consultations on ANY type of written communication in EVERY field of study at the College. Consultants work with students at any stage of the writing process from brainstorming to final drafts.
All selected consultants are highly trained as a result of taking an intensive 16-week course where they become familiar with the theoretical aspects of Writing Center pedagogy and writing instruction. The Collaboratory provides a welcoming environment where students can interact with their fellow peers about strategies on becoming stronger and more effective writers. Our philosophy is based on the idea that creating better writers is a collaborative effort. We encourage students to come prepared to have insightful discussions with consultants about ways they can improve as writers, not just for a given assignment. In addition to collaborative writing instruction, the lab has a reference library where students can take advantage of writing handbooks or documentation guides, such as MLA and APA. The lab also has several computers that students may use to check email or work on assignments. There is a lounge area where students can take advantage of a quiet environment conducive for reading or taking well-deserved breaks in between classes. The lab has a coffee machine, refrigerator, and animal crackers as a snack for writers on the go. There is also a space for in-lab workshops, which will be available for students, faculty and staff throughout the College. All workshops will be run by our trained student consultants. We encourage students to take advantage of this resource throughout their entire time on campus because we believe that creating better writers requires an ongoing commitment. Students can call to make an appointment or come by to speak with our friendly front-desk staff, who are also students at the College. Students can also have drop-in appointments. Our hours will be Monday thru Thursday from 10 am-7 pm. For more information or to schedule a free 30-minute consultation send an email to collaboratory@centenarycollege.edu or call 908-852-1400 ext. 2400.

And the records keep on coming! The IHSA team has won the 2011 IHSA National Championship with 33 points, 11 points ahead of second-place teams Skidmore University and St. Lawrence. Senior captain Marissa Cohen captured the coveted 2011 Cacchione Cup title, dominating the three phases of the class.

This is the second time in three years that the team has won both; they were the 2009 National Champions as well and graduate Lindsay Clark won the 2009 Cacchione Cup.

"This win was a huge team effort," said coach Michael Dowling. "We had a great support system and are extremely proud of everyone. It wasn't just the riders who helped us win--it was the entire equine department, students who came to help, the students who were cheering us on from back in NJ, and the entire team as a whole who worked together all year to help make this a success. We cannot express our gratitude to all of them enough."

"In order to be successful, you have to have a very grounded team and it definitely showed in our win, from the students at home cheering us on, the riders, and the volunteers who came to Nationals," added Heather Clark. "We are very proud of and looking forward to the success of the team in the future."

The Centenary IHSA team hosted their first home show of the season on November 20th and continued their winning streak, finishing the show with 45 points, 11 points ahead of the second place team from William Patterson University. Centenary has won all 7 shows that they have competed in for the fall season and racked up a perfect point card at the November 14th show with 49 points. This is the highest amount of points a team can receive.

"Heather [Clark] and I are both extremely pleased with the success our team has had at this point in our competition year," said head coach Michael Dowling. "We have significantly stronger riders in the upper levels that we have not always had. We are also pleased to see the other schools in our region riding strongly, making for good competition."

"We are thrilled with how passionate and determined our team is,"added assistant coach Heather Clark. "It really shows in our results."

Next semester, the team will return for another round of shows before beginning the road to IHSA Nationals. This prestigious event will once again be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Centenary was Reserve Champion last year out of over 300 schools and won Nationals in 2009.

Candice King, a well-known international grand prix rider, spent the weekend teaching a riding clinic at the Equine Center on November 12th and 13th. There were four sessions on Friday and three sessions on Saturday, each containing six riders.

“Mind over matter,” Candice emphasized over and over again. “Be mentally strong. Believe in it.”

She set up a course that required riders to think and plan their tracks to each jump. She also wanted riders to focus on rhythm and not necessarily finding a distance. “You need the correct rhythm to jump. If you don’t have any, it doesn’t matter what distance you’ve found; it won’t work out.”

Even if a rider had trouble with a line the first time, she was always there to encourage. “I’m here to challenge you,” she said. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing my job. Take a breath and think about it.”

Candice not only taught from the ground but also rode multiple horses to provide the riders with a visual and to school the horse.
On Thursday, November 11th, the Equine Center hosted an Equine Career Panel in the Lackland Center....

On Thursday, November 11th, the Equine Center hosted an Equine Career Panel in the Lackland Center. There were about 75 students in attendance and nine equine professionals attended to speak to the students about their personal experiences in the equine industry. The goal of this was to allow students to ask questions and discover more information about the career path they plan on taking in the future.

Dr. Mike Fugaro began the evening by questioning the panelists and having them discuss their ideas and opinions on what their job entails, how they obtained their jobs, what experiences they’ve had, what they look for in a prospective employee, and what types of salaries students can expect for each job.

Then the panelists were divided up into four groups: Teaching and Training, Equine Science, Equine Business, and Communications. These are the areas of concentration offered in the equine studies degree and the students branched off into each group. Many students found this beneficial because it allowed them to ask questions and learn more about their expectant career path. They all agreed that this was a great networking opportunity as well.
