Women’s Volleyball Comes Up Short In University Of Scranton Invitational
SCRANTON, Pa. (September 11, 2010) – The Centenary women’s volleyball team fought hard but was unable to pick up a win in the University of Scranton Volleyball Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11, in Scranton, Pa. The Lady Cyclones finished the event 0-4, dropping their overall record to 1-7.
On Friday, Centenary opened the competition with a rematch against Wilkes, which defeated the Lady Cyclones 3-0 on Sept. 4 in the Greyhound Invitational. This time, however, the contest was much closer, as CC took the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-17, before dropping the last three, 25-15, 27-25 and 15-4 to fall, 3-2. Centenary then fell to Pitt-Bradford, 3-0, losing 25-20, 25-8 and 25-16.
CC also opened Saturday’s action with a 3-2 loss, this time to King’s. The two teams could not have been more evenly matched, as four of the five sets were decided by two points, but Centenary eventually fell, 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 23-25 and 14-16. The Lady Cyclones then took on Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Marywood, but again fell in a closely fought match, 23-25, 27-25, 21-25 and 26-28.
Sophomore Jelena Markovic (Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina/The Economic School) was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 122 assists, 32 digs, 25 kills, 17 aces and 11 blocks in the four matches. Junior Devon Paffendorf (Hackettstown, N.J./Mount Olive) led the team with 67 kills and fellow classmate Kelsey Walter (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) tied for the team lead with 32 digs. Sophomore Eriku Chu (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) blocked a team-high 12 shots.
Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, with its first CSAC contest of the season, on the road against Rosemont.
