Junior Courtney Flanagan tallied a career-high five points against Baptist Bible.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 2, 2010) – Junior Courtney Flanagan (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope John XXIII) tallied a career-high five points to lead the Centenary women’s soccer team (6-6, 3-1 CSAC) to an 8-0 shutout of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Baptist Bible (5-4, 1-1 CSAC), Saturday in Hackettstown, N.J.

The scoring output against the Defenders marks Flanagan’s first points since tallying four on two goals in Centenary’s 9-0 win over Old Westbury on Sept. 1. Against the Defenders, eight other Cyclones recorded at least one point. Junior Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) scored twice while Jazmine Farrell (Newton, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and junior Tatiana Kingston (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) each tallied a goal and an assist.

Senior Jen Dexter (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) and sophomore Sara Smith (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) netted one goal apiece and seniors Kelley Michanczyk (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and Sam Vanni (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland) and sophomore Chrissy Bressman (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) all recorded one assist. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stopped two shots to preserve the shutout.

Centenary outshot its opponent, 26-8, including an 18-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cyclones took 10 corner kicks while the Defenders finished with two.

In the seventh minute of the contest, Farrell was able to get the ball past BBC keeper Cierra Byron for Veverka, who netted her fifth goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Dexter headed in a beautiful cross from Vanni for the quick 2-0 lead. Flanagan added to the advantage in the 13th minute with a laser from 30-yards out and then in the 36th minute scored on a shot from the top of the box off a Michanczyk assist for a 4-0 edge. Veverka recorded her second goal of the game near the end of the first half as Kingston tallied the assist, and the home team went into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

Early in the second stanza, Bressman picked up her first assist on the year when she played the ball ahead on a fast break to classmate Smith, who netted her second goal of the year. Kingston knocked in her third score of the season in the 62nd minute, a rocket from 35-yards out, and Farrell tallied her team-leading 12th goal of the 2010 campaign late in the contest off a pass from Flanagan.

Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with a key CSAC matchup at defending champion Cabrini at 6:30 p.m. The Cavaliers defeated the Cyclones in the 2009 CSAC Tournament with a 3-1 victory in the semifinals.
