Volleyball Sweeps Cedar Crest

Junior Devon Paffendorf is now the program's all-time leader in kills.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 2, 2010) – Junior Devon Paffendorf (Hackettstown, N.J./Mount Olive) became Centenary volleyball’s all-time leader in kills with 16 as the Lady Cyclones swept  Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Cedar Crest, 3-0, Saturday in Hackettstown, N.J. Centenary (5-14, 2-0 CSAC) won its second consecutive match and picked up its third win in its last four bouts in defeating the Falcons (2-10, 1-4 CSAC).

Paffendorf’s kills total gives her 779 for her career as she moves past current assistant coach Christina Boyer, who tallied 770. The junior also recorded three aces, three digs and one block in the victory over Cedar Crest.

Sophomore Jelena Markovic (Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina/The Economic School) posted 24 assists, six aces, six kills, five digs and three total blocks and fellow classmate Erika Chu (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) finished with seven kills, six total blocks and one ace. Senior Kelly Zegarowitz (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) recorded a .750 kill percentage with six kills in eight attacks while also tallying five aces, four assists and three digs. Junior Kelsey Walter (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) led the team with eight digs on the day.

Leading 1-0 in the first set, senior Liz Luckenbill (Schuylkill, Pa./Schuylkill) served the advantage to 5-0 before Cedar Crest recorded its first point. Centenary built the edge to 15-9 before Paffendorf served the home team to a 20-9 advantage. Cedar Crest stopped the run to make it 20-10, but Centenary got the serve right back and Markovic finished out the set.

Centenary opened the second set with a 3-0 run and built the lead to 10-3 before Cedar Crest bounced back, cutting the advantage to 12-10. But Zegarowitz gave Centenary some breathing room, winning four straight points on her serve to give the home squad a 17-10 advantage, and they would go on to win by 10.

The third set began with a 5-0 Centenary run. But the Falcons answered right back with a 4-0 streak of their own to cut the lead to one. Holding a 15-11 advantage, Zegarowitz again gave her team some breathing room, serving five straight points to give Centenary a 21-11 lead. The home squad would go on to win by nine and win the match, 3-0.

Centenary is 2-0 to start CSAC play for the second consecutive season. The Cyclones look to improve to 3-0 in conference action for the first time in program history when they face Neumann at home on Monday, Oct. 4, at 7:00 p.m.
