Volleyball Competes In Kean Invitational

Junior Devon Paffendorf finished with 20 kills in two matches on Friday.

UNION, N.J. (September 17, 2010) – The Centenary women’s volleyball team competed in the opening day of the Kean Invitational, Friday in Union, N.J. The Lady Cyclones (2-9) opened the day with a 3-0 loss to Berry and followed that with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the host team.

Junior Devon Paffendorf (Hackettstown, N.J./Mount Olive) finished the two-games with 20 kills and four digs and sophomore Jelena Markovic (Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina/The Economic School) recorded 10 kills, 29 assists and 15 digs. Senior Kelly Zegarowitz (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) contributed five kills, 12 assists, six digs and two aces and junior Kelsey Walter (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) recorded 26 digs and three aces.

In the first game, Berry was too much for Centenary to handle, using 32 kills to the Cyclones’ 13 to win 25-10, 25-11 and 25-12. Paffendorf tallied seven kills and Markovic finished with as many assists.

Against the host team, the Lady Cyclones kept the match closer, eventually falling 16-25, 25-22, 19-25 and 14-25. CC finished with 35 kills but KU was able to better that with 43. Markovic posted a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs, as well as six kills. Zegarowitz contributed eight assists, five kills and five digs, Paffendorf recorded 13 kills and three digs and Walter finished with a match-high 21 digs.

Centenary returns to action with the second day of the Kean Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Cyclones will face CCNY at noon and Montclair State at 2:30 p.m.
