United Way of Northern New Jersey Women’s Leadership Council Establishes Centenary College Scholarship

06/29/2012, 10:21 AM

Hackettstown, N.J. – The United Way of Northern New Jersey Women’s Leadership Council recently announced that it would be establishing a $5,000 annual scholarship for a Centenary College student with Centenary College matching the funds with another $5,000.  This scholarship will be in effect starting in the Fall 2012 semester.  This agreement builds on the United Way of Northern New Jersey Women’s Leadership Council’s partnership with Warren County Community College where, for a second year in a row, they will be offering a $5,000 scholarship with a $5,000 match from that institution.

“I am so pleased to partner with the United Way of Northern New Jersey on this initiative,” says Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, Centenary College President.  “This is an exciting opportunity to reward local women who have earned their associate degrees from our neighboring county college, Warren County Community College, by lessening the costs of continuing their education.”

The Scholarship was established to assist female, non-traditional students from Warren County with expenses related to education.  Applicants must be a transfer student from Warren County Community College, be a resident of Warren County and must be at least 21 years of age.  Financial need and potential for program completion are taken into account in the selection of award recipients, as well as additional challenges that a student may have to overcome in order to pursue a degree program.

“I am pleased that this scholarship through Centenary College has been established to provide the women in Warren County the education they need which will lead to employment, enabling these women to financially support themselves and their families,” says Sarah Brelvi, Chief Professional Officer and Director of the Leadership Council for the United Way of Northern New Jersey.

About the United Way of Northern New Jersey
In January 2011, five United Ways consolidated to form United Way of Northern New Jersey. The combined efforts allow for an increase in productivity, an extension of reach and a maximization of resources. But most of all, the merger increases the ability to have a positive impact on each individual community and thus the northern New Jersey region as a whole.

United Way focuses on the building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement and good health.  Its aim is to create long-lasting community change in these areas by addressing the underlying causes of the most significant local issues.
