Men's Soccer Shuts Out Third Straight Opponent
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (September 20, 2010) – The Centenary men’s soccer team shut out its third consecutive opponent, posting a 4-0 victory over Brooklyn, Monday in Brooklyn, N.Y. Junior Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) continued his hot offensive streak with a goal and an assist to lead the Cyclones, who improved to 3-4 on the season. BC fell to 2-2-1.
Pinnella has five goals and two assists in Centenary’s last three games, all wins. Against BC, four other Cyclones tallied at least a point. Junior Dan Berniz (Budd Lake, N.J./Mount Olive) scored a goal, as did senior Dan Charkowski (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills). A pair of freshmen also contributed to the victory, as Reid Meeker (Phillipsburg, N.J./Notre Dame Green Pond) picked up his first career goal and Antonio Cabrera (Pasadena, Texas/Pasadena Memorial) recorded his first assist as a Cyclone. Junior Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) stopped three shots for the eighth shutout of his career, a program-best.
All of Centenary’s scoring took place in the first half. Berniz put the road team on the scoreboard early, finding the back of the net in the third minute off an assist from Pinnella. The two freshmen collaborated on Centenary’s next goal, as Meeker headed in Cabrera’s cross for the 2-0 lead in the 28th minute. Three minutes later, Charkowski bent his corner kick past BC keeper Stamatis Boundouris for the three-goal lead and Pinnella finished off the scoring in the 42nd minute with a breakaway goal.
Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, with a road game against Eastern at 2:30 p.m.
