Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Berkeley, 3-0
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 18, 2010) – Junior goalkeeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) became the program’s all-time leader in shutouts as the Centenary men’s soccer team (2-4) defeated Berkeley, 3-0, at Cyclone Field on Saturday. Rogers recorded his second clean-sheet of the season and the seventh of his career to move past Damien DiBuono, who finished his Cyclone career with six.
Rogers was stellar in the net for Centenary, registering four saves in the win. Junior forward Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) scored the first of his two goals on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. Centenary would retain the one-goal lead until the 63rd minute when junior Daniel Berniz (Budd Lake, N.J./Mount Olive) scored his first goal of the season off a great feed by Pinnella to give the Cyclones a two-goal advantage.
The final goal saw Pinnella put a header past the Berkeley keeper off a long side throw-in by sophomore Patrick Bourland (Vienna, N.J./Hackettstown).
The game was physical and foul-plagued throughout. A total of six yellow cards and three red cards were given to players and coaches. The Cyclones outshout Berkeley 29-12.
Centenary is next in action on Monday, Sept. 20 when the Cyclones travel to play Brooklyn College at 4:00 p.m.
