Lady Cyclones Lose 1-0 to Drew in Cyclone Classic Finals
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 5, 2010) – In the final game of the 2010 Cyclone Kickoff Classic, Centenary dropped a hard-fought contest 1-0 to Drew University. The loss dropped the Lady Cyclones to 2-1, while the Rangers improve to 2-1 with the victory.
The match was physical throughout and saw little in the way of offensive execution. Neither team was able to get into a much of a rhythm and the game was scoreless going into the half.
The game’s lone goal was scored midway through the second half when sophomore Country Carnavale pushed forward a pass between two Centenary defenders to find freshman Caroline Kuras streaking into the box where she was able to put the ball into the corner of the net. Centenary’s best scoring opportunity came about 10 minutes into the first half when senior Jazmine Farrell’s (Newton, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) shot in the box was saved by Drew keeper, Kimberley Jaikisson (Columbia, N.J/Columbia). Farrell led all Lady Cyclones with three shots.
Both goalkeepers were on top of their games, making critical saves when needed. Centenary’s senior keeper, Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J./Hunterdon Central) finished with seven saves. Drew’s sophomore goalkeeper, Jaikisson stopped three shots on her way to a shutout.
The last 15 minutes saw the Lady Cyclones turn up the pressure in an attempt to tie the game, but Drew’s defense was up to the challenge and Centenary could not manage a tying goal.
The Lady Cyclones return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Richard Stockton at 7pm.
