Supplies for Ghana Middle School in West Africa
The Centenary Circle K Club and The Centenary Majors and Minors (M&M) Club are undertaking a collection of school supplies for the Obuasi Independence M/A (Municipal Assembly) Middle School," a junior high school near the city of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
The Obuasi Independence M/A Middle School has 500 students (60% girls and 40% boys), whose ages range from 12 to 18. The school employs 17 classroom teachers. In an effort to provide the best education possible, the teachers and administrators of the school have to develop outside sources of support for event the most basic school supplies (chalk, notebooks, pencils, writing paper, etc.).
The school no longer receive a monthly allowance from the government to offset out-of pocket expenses for school supplies.
In fall 2012, Centenary College students, staff, faculty, and alumni collected school supplies that were shipped to the school in two separate cargo barrels. The supplies arrived safely in January and February of 2013. However, the need continues and the Circle K Club and the M&M Club will be collecting school supplies from now until early March. If you can help, here is what is needed:
- Composition notebooks (wide-ruled)Packages of # 2 pencils, pens, and erasers
- Spiral notebooks
- Chalk for blackboards
- Math supplies (compasses, protractors, and square sets)
- Miscellaneous office supplies (staplers and staples, paperclips, etc.)
Collection boxes are placed around campus (Academic Success Center, Brotherton Hall 211, Career Services, the Gym, and the Taylor Memorial Library). If you want to arrange for an individual pickup of your school supply donation,
