Hackettstown, N.J., May 26, 2010 — Centenary College is hosting an information session for the College’s Summer Scholars enrichment program from 7 to 8:30 p.m on Thursday, June 10, 2010, in the Front Parlours of the Edward W. Seay Administration Building.
Diane Finnan, Centenary College’s Vice President for Enrollment Management and Strategic Branding, will be welcoming attendees. Doug Hooper, Centenary College’s Coordinator for the Summer Scholars program, will be providing an overview of the program. Class instructors will be on hand to provide some insight on the courses that will be offered, and attendees will also have the option to tour the campus.
Summer Scholars will run weekly from July 11 through August 6. This is the third year the Hackettstown-based institution will be offering this program. Students have the opportunity to attend classes and live on campus or participate as a day student.
“Summer Scholars is an innovative program designed to aid students in the process of self-discovery,” says Hooper. “I hope people take the opportunity to attend this open house to learn more about this innovative program.”
This summer program is designed to broaden the minds of young students by introducing subjects their schools might not offer to them, which also gives them the opportunity to experiment with classes to see if they would like to pursue the subject matter as a career. Centenary caters to a diverse group of students from all over the country and the world.
The 2010 season will offer four one-week sessions running from Sunday to Friday. Within each session, eleven academic tracks are offered, within which there are a variety of focus areas. Within many academic tracks, there is a variety of focus areas. Tracks include Creative Writing, Fashion Design, Computer Programming & Game Design, Veterinary Science, Just Dance!, Education Studies, Radio Broadcasting, Television Production, Forensic Science, Math & Chaos Theory and Going Green.

Just Dance! and Education Studies are new classes that have been added to the curriculum. Just Dance! exposes students to a wide variety of dance and movement. It incorporates yoga, Pilates and stretching. Students work on body alignment, to mood and tone, to technique precision.
The Education Studies class is a one-week immersion in education and teaching that allows students to explore their interests in the teaching profession. Students in this course discover their learning styles as they reflect on their desire to teach. Through their experience, they apply critical thinking to address global issues while creating an innovative curriculum.
They focus on different modes of learning, different styles of teaching, what constitutes a curriculum and progressive steps in our current education system. They include a brief survey of important historic developments and current trends, and will discuss the strongest factors for engaging students at different grade levels and stages of learning.
Students may sign up for one or more sessions. Students attending multiple sessions may stay in the same course without repeating the curriculum, or may choose a new academic track. All sessions accept students at all levels. The first session starts on July 11, 2010.
Students attending multiple sessions also have the option of staying on campus between sessions. The weekend stay-over gives students a better chance to get to know the staff and campus, and includes fun and extracurricular activities and events. Students who live in the area are welcome to enjoy the comforts of home and return on the next Sunday, refreshed and ready to start a new session.
Summer Scholars will offer multi-week discounts for both day and residential students. A student staying two weeks, for example, could save $100 to $300 depending on his or her enrollment.
