Hackettstown, N.J.–   The “Centenary Downtown” Office, which is located at 217 Main Street in Hackettstown, serves as a resource for the community.  One program that is available is free and unlimited counseling for combat veterans who attend the College or live in the surrounding community.  This opportunity is a co-venture between the Office of Veteran Services at Centenary College and the VetCenter-Bloomfield.

This service includes individual and group readjustment counseling, marital and family counseling, substance abuse counseling and dream therapy, among other services.
The VetCenter is an agency of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.  All services are free and unlimited.  Each counselor is a qualified professional who comprehends a military culture. The two counselors who hold hours at Centenary Downtown Office are Judith Schaeffer-Benoit and Neil Duffy.

Judith Schaeffer-Benoit is an LCSW (licensed clinical social worker/licensed marriage and family therapist) who trained at Gestalt Institute, the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London and Rutgers University and has been practicing family and marital therapy for over 20 years. Neil Duffy is a highly decorated Marine Corps veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He served with Echo Battery 2/10 in Iraq, Okinawa, Fuji and the Philippines, and ER relief after Hurricane Katrina in Slidell County, Louisiana.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Rider University with a specialization in PTSD. Schaeffer-Benoit is currently on staff at the Bloomfield VetCenter and Duffy has recently relocated to the Secaucus VetCenter.

“We want to continue to make veterans aware of this local service, as it is important to offer valuable resources to Centenary students and the greater community,” says Margie Pavlichko, Director of Veteran Services at Centenary College.

The Office of Veteran Services at Centenary College has been established on firm ground to provide valuable services and resources to student veterans, veteran dependents, active military, and reservists in the Centenary community.  We are dedicated to assisting them in navigating internal and external systems, obtaining educational goals, developing initiatives, and helping to facilitate a seamless transition to the academic arena.  The goal is to continue to explore, expand, and provide quality services and resources.

Counseling is offered from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Thursday. To schedule an appointment, please call the Bloomfield VetCenter at (973) 748-0980 and request an appointment at the Hackettstown outpost.
