09/07/2010, 03:47 PM

Hackettstown, N.J., September 7, 2010 – Centenary College President Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite will speak at the United Methodist Breakfast Fellowship at Trinity United Methodist Church at 8 a.m. on September 11, 2010.  The subject of her talk is Centenary: Then and Now, which will also touch on Centenary’s relationship with Trinity United Methodist Church since its founding.  Dr. Frank Fowler is the Senior Pastor at Trinity.

“Centenary College and Trinity United Methodist Church have been a support to each other throughout the years,” says Dr. Lewthwaite.  “I am pleased to have the opportunity to address our neighbors at Trinity and the United Methodist Men’s Breakfast Fellowship.”

Dr. Lewthwaite was named President of Centenary College in May 2009.  Dr. Lewthwaite is the second woman and second former faculty member to serve as President of Centenary.  She has utilized her background in academic affairs to advance the College’s mission: providing a student-centered liberal arts education with a career focus and a special emphasis on community service.

“One of the goals for our students is to experience the benefits of volunteerism and becoming leaders in their community,” says Dr. Lewthwaite.  “Centenary College is an institution that changes lives of our students and is a Beacon for the Region for our neighbors and beyond.”

Dr. Lewthwaite’s leadership roles at Centenary College include serving as Acting President, Acting Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Academic Officer. As a member of the executive staff since 2003, she has played a vital part in transforming Centenary into New Jersey’s fastest-growing independent college. During that time, the College adopted its long-term strategic plan, as well as its Greater Expectations Learning Outcomes program to better prepare students for successful lives and careers after college.

Dr. Lewthwaite began her career at Centenary in 1985, rising through the ranks of the faculty to become chair of the Education Department and eventually the College’s top academic leader. Before coming to Centenary, she worked extensively in the corporate world. Dr. Lewthwaite holds a bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pace University, and her MBA and doctor of Education degrees from St. John’s University.
