Centenary College Now Offers a Double Major in Mathematics and Accounting

01/03/2013, 01:59 PM

Hackettstown, N.J., January 3, 2013 – The Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department and Business Department of Centenary College are proud to announce a new double major in Mathematics and Accounting.

The initiative was spearheaded by Assistant Professor of Mathematics Kathy Turrisi in an effort to encourage students who are interested in both areas of study.

“The analytical skills needed for mathematics are also needed in Accounting, therefore, this double major will provide additional career opportunities for our students,” says Turrisi.

The goal of establishing this double major is part of Centenary’s mission to help growing students strive for a professional life, giving them one more option to find their place in the world and to choose the career they wish to pursue. In fact, students who graduate from this program will be eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant exams.

“This double major will greatly enhance the skills a student learns from both areas,” says Dr. James Patterson, Chief Academic Officer and Provost at Centenary College.  “In mathematics, local reasoning, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills are taught, while Accounting teaches the same things, but in teams.”

Students who enroll in this double major will also have the opportunity to complete an internship where they provide free tax preparation services to the greater community called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) under the direction of James Ford, Assistant Professor of Business.

“This internship will allow for students to gain knowledge from experiential learning techniques that cannot be gained from a classroom,” says Ford.  “This is a value-added program that really provides students with an edge as far as standing out from the crowd once they graduate.”
