Centenary College Holds Groundbreaking for Turf Field Project

Hackettstown, N.J. – Centenary College recently held a groundbreaking for an athletic turf field that is expected to be completed in January.

A turf field allows for expanded practice time and enhanced safety for the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams, as well as more time for intramural athletic use and increased accessibility for community soccer organizations.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students,” says Kevin Davies, Head Women’s Soccer Coach.  “They are looking forward to playing on the new turf field.  It is an exciting time for our Lacrosse and Soccer athletes right now.”
A turf field allows for the opportunity for more playing time since it lessens the possibility of practices being cancelled and games being postponed due to common weather events that render a grass field unplayable.  Additionally, by replacing the current field with synthetic turf, athletes will play in safer conditions and the College will save on maintenance costs over the field’s lifetime due to the increased resistance to the breakdown of the turf.

Some noteworthy soccer and lacrosse athletic accomplishments for this past year include the following: Men’s Soccer defeated a nationally ranked opponent for the first time in the program’s history; Women’s Soccer earned a berth in the CSAC Tournament for the seventh straight year in 2012 and had three First Team All-CSAC performers; Men’s Lacrosse set a team record with 14 victories and advanced to its first-ever CSAC Tournament championship game; and Women’s Lacrosse advanced to the CSAC Tournament quarterfinals.
The Reeves Foundation donated $333,000 over a four year period for this project and the Centenary community raised $667,000.
