Dr. Dick’s Presidency Starts July 1
The board of trustees announced March 9 the appointment of· Dr Charles H. Dick formerly vice president of the Cornell University Medical Center m New York City, as its ninth president.
Robert W.Vey, president of the board of trustees, made the announcement at a 4 p.m. program in Whitney Chapel before faculty, students and staff. The appointment is effective July 1.
Dr. Edward W. Seay, current president of the college, will retire June 30 after 28 years of service, the third longest college president's tenure in the United States.
Mr. Vey noted that under the able leadership of Centenary trustee Arthur D. Van Winkle, a presidential search committee was appointed last fall to find a successor to our retiring president. A national search was launched and after considering nearly200 candidates and interviewing a group with exceptional qualifications' Dr. Dick was appointed.
"We are fortunate to have a man' of Dr. Dick's education, experience and stature to work with the faculty, students and staff of this 109 year-old institution of higher education Mr. Vey continued. "He will provide the necessary leadership to guide Centenary College for Women into its second century of providing quality education at a time of national change in educational philosophies and priorities."'
Experienced educator
Before serving at the Cornell University Medical Center, Dr. Dick was assistant commissioner for public education at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C., from 1971-73, assistant to the president at the California' State University from 1969-1971 he was formerly assistant vice president at the State University of New York in Buffalo. Prior to that he served, as director of public education at Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo.
An educational consultant to many colleges, institutions and organizations, Dr. Dick has been chairman of the national freedom of information task force at HEW, a participant in the national conference on high blood pressure, education director for the world conference on smoking and health in 1967, a member of the national public education committee of the American Cancer Society and a director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America.
He is a nationally accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the National Association of Science Writers and The Council on Foundations. Highly schooled Dr. Dick. a native of Kansas, received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Kansas, a master of arts from Canisius College, a master of science from California State University, a doctor of science from Colorado State University and a doctor of philosophy from Northwestern University.
He is the author of educational articles and books, is listed in Who's Who in America and was the recipient of the 1972 Public Relations Society of America award and the National Safety Council award.
Dr. Dick is married to the former Barbara Deren of Buffalo, who is associated with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
