Meet the First Year Leaders!

First Year Leaders are upper class students at Centenary College who have been hand-picked because of their leadership qualities.

They fill the roles of mentor, friend or informative source for incoming students.

First Year Leaders are here to help new students with a smooth transition from high school to college. These leaders are embedded in the Academic Foundations at Centenary Courses (AFC) and attend every session of their assigned class. In the classroom they are expected to aid the professor. Outside class, the FYL’s are available to tutor students in all AFC related course work and are responsible for coordinating social programs that promote team building and bonding.

Ronald Ackerman

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 D Professor Bergey

Class of 2017

Major: Biology

Hometown: Hackettstown, NJ

Centenary is helping me reach my goals by providing me with a great education and the opportunities of internships, which I plan to pursue this year.

A fun fact about myself is that my family and I are Disney Addicts. I've gone to Walt Disney World around 13-14 times in my life. I honestly believe that no matter how old you are, you can never go too many times.

Nick Barzano

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 P Professor Russell

Class of 2016

Major: Secondary Education History and Special Ed

Hometown: Knowlton Township, NJ

After Centenary I would like to continue to get a higher education and work towards my next degree while possibly teaching and being a wrestling coach.

Centenary offers various opportunities academically and socially that help me gain life skills that I will use down the road.

Lauren Buettner

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 J Professor Brown

Class of 2015

Major: Equine Science

Hometown: Chelmsford, MA

Centenary has beyond exceeded my expectations in terms of helping me reach my goals. I love the small classes because professors have the opportunity to get to know their students' goals and aspirations. I am incredibly thankful for the help that I have received from various professors who have shared with me their connections within the industry.

My favorite memory at Centenary is winning the 2014 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, PA of course!

Michelle Bull

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 J Professor Brown

Class of 2017

Major: Business Marketing and Equine Studies

Hometown: Haddonfield, NJ

After Centenary I would love to be able to work in sales for an Equine company or even work for USEF. I want to continue to ride horses as a hobby rather than as my profession

My favorite memory so far was that as a freshman, I was able to ride at Nationals for the dressage team. It was a great experience and a wonderful opportunity.

Shelby Cashman

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 I Professor Simms

Class of 2016

Major: Equine Science

Hometown: West Point, NY

I spend a lot of my time at horse shows since I am part of so many teams or just up at the barn riding some extra horses or helping out.

If I could have any super power it would be to fly because you could not only help people in danger but you could also travel the world so easily and see so many amazing things!

Chelsea Cheslock

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 K Professor Taylor

Class of 2016

Major: Equine Studies: Science and Business Administration: Management

Hometown: North Haven, CT

My favorite memory at Centenary was when I found out I was voted Captain of the Hunter/Jumper Team.

During my free time and on the weekends I hang out with friends, go to activities on campus or head up to the barn to get a few extra rides in.

Michael Clinton

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 H Professor Mendres

Class of 2017

Major: Communication

Hometown: Islandia, NY

The networking that Centenary offers is quite incredible and is helping me reach my goals. Since it's a small school, there are more opportunities for each student rather than limited prospects spread thinly across the population.

I'm a big reader and movie watcher on the weekends and in my free time. During the summer, I'm only twenty minutes from the beach so that's always an option too.

Amanda Coons

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 P Professor Russell

Class of 2016

Major: Liberal Arts, Early Education

Hometown: Woodbridge, NJ

I chose Centenary for the family atmosphere and the possibility to get involved and active on campus.

One of my favorite memories at Centenary was during my AFC class our FYLs took the class to a pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins, we then brought them back to campus and smashed them with baseball bats!

Camille Dawson

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 H Professor Mendres

Class of 2015

Major: Equine and Communication, Business Minor

Hometown: Lisbon, NY

If I could have any superpower it would be to read people's minds. Now a days it is so hard to get the honest truth out of the people around us. I feel that if we all just spoke our minds instead of dancing around our thoughts and opinions the world would be a simpler place.

My favorite memory at Centenary would be my entire junior year. It has been the most exciting and rewarding year so far and I made so many great memories.

Joseph Forcellini

AFC Course Replacement: AFC 1001 L Professor Pelletier

Class of 2015

Major: Business Administration, Management and Marketing

Hometown: Hatfield, Pennsylvania

I chose Centenary because it is a small school with an upbeat environment and the opportunity to play baseball.

The professors, coaches, students, and teammates that I have at Centenary are all helping me reach my goals. They help push me everyday to be the best person I can be, both in and out of the classroom to become a student athlete.

Dana Galella

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 F Professor Davis

Class of 2016

Major: Fashion Merchandising, Dance Minor

Hometown: Secaucus, NJ

The main reason for me choosing Centenary was the fact that it was one of the few schools that offered fashion merchandising as a major, n addition to that it was a small school. Since I grew up having a learning disability I felt that this school would really be beneficial to me, knowing I could have one on one attention from my professors.

One of my favorite memories about Centenary was meeting my dance partner Saquan, the one person who inspired me and pushed me the most when it came to dancing.

Mallory George

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 E Professor Sharp

Class of 2017

Major: Business Management

Hometown: Berkeley Heights, NJ

The small teacher to student ratios at Centenary are helping me reach my goals by enabling me to get individual attention which adds to the nurturing learning environment.

During my free time/on the weekends I like to hangout with my friends and family. I also enjoy playing basketball, horseback riding and working out.

Kayla Gonzalez

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 E Sharp

I have so many great memories from the time I have spent at Centenary and cannot wait for future memories. If I had to choose my favorite memory it would be when my class and I put on the spring fashion show.

If I could have any super power in the world I would choose the power to heal. I would choose this power because I truly hate seeing others hurt or in pain. I would love to be able to help others no matter what type of pain a person may be going through.

Justina Gun

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 C Professor Morgan

Class of 2016

Major: Sociology

Hometown: Netcong, NJ

My favorite memory at Centenary so far was the very first night we moved into the dorms, and everyone was running around to each others rooms, meeting the rest of the freshmen class. Everyone was so friendly and it made Centenary feel so much like home.

If I could choose one super power, I would choose to be able to teleport. I think that being able to go anywhere I want at any time would be really exciting and I would be able to travel the world at any time.

After Centenary I want to continue my professional riding career and hopefully open a barn of my own.

During my free time when I don't have IHSA or Hunter/Jumper team horse shows, I usually go to a barn I work at and ride. But I love just hanging out with my friends at school and participating at school events.

Cary Lawson

AFC Course Placement: AFC 1001 F Professor Davis

Class of 2015

Major: Business Administration, Management

Hometown: Cape May Court House, NJ

I chose Centenary because as soon as I stepped on campus it just felt like the right place to be; it felt like home. It's a small school that allows me to stay focused on my studies while meeting all the right people. Here I am Cary Lawson, not just another student on campus.

If I could have any super power it would be super speed! I tend to be a busy persn and I often run out of time during the day to get more done. Super speed would allow me to accomplish more throughout the days and spend more time relaxing and having fun with my friends.

Centenary is helping me reach my goals because it offers very personalized assistance with any question or need you may have and because of this they help me work through any major career choices or concerns anyone in their twenties may have while looking for a career path and directions.

Elaine Wessel

Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana

I chose Centenary because of the reputable equine program and the extensive networking opportunities it provides due to its prime location within the equine industry.

My favorite memory at Centenary so far is what my friends and I have dubbed our "family dinners" in the cafeteria. We all try to eat dinner together as often as possible, often being some of the first people in line and then the last people kicked out three hours later as dinner is closing. We spend the whole time telling stories, giving advice, debating, and learning more about each other, but mostly we just laugh.

Phillip Williamson
