IHSA -Intercollegiate Horse Show Association

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) was established in 1967 and today encompasses 29 Regions in 9 Zones.

Our equitation riders participate in the IHSA Hunt Seat Equitation competitions, which require that we travel to other colleges, as well as host horse shows, among 11 colleges in our region. We now compete in Zone 3, Region 3.

Students ride horses that are owned by the host college and chosen by random draw. The use of personal tack is not allowed and schooling is not permitted. The theory behind this structure is to equalize variables of the competition and test the horsemanship of the riders.

Classes range from walk/trot for beginner riders to the Open Division for the more experienced riders.  During the year, riders accumulate points and ribbons at local shows to qualify for the Regional Finals in their respective divisions. The top three riders in each class of the Regional Finals move forward to the Zone Finals. The top two competitors in each class at Zones qualify for Nationals.

Centenary is consistently ranked at the top of intercollegiate riding competition. Since 1990, for over 2 consecutive decades, Centenary's Intercollegiate Riding Team won the IHSA Zone 2, Region I Championships and represented the College at the IHSA National Finals. In 2009, Centenary won the IHSA National Championship and junior Lindsay Clark won the coveted Cacchione Cup; winning both championships was a first for the team. In 2011, the team made history and won both titles again.

Heather Clark joined Michael Dowling in the Fall 2008 as the official assistant coach.  Although they have only been coaching the IHSA team for two years, they have had former partnerships outside of Centenary College with different clients from jumpers, equitation and hunters.  Their previous partnership has allowed them to form a competitive bond as the joint coaches of the Centenary College IHSA team.  In their first year together as the coaches, they successfully coached the Cacchione Cup winner of the Region for both English and Western, were Region champions, and were Zone Champions.  These four attributes have never been accomplished all in one year before in the history of Centenary College.

Centenary Wins 2011 IHSA Nationals

The IHSA team has won the 2011 IHSA National Championship with 33 points, 11 points ahead of second-place teams Skidmore University and St. Lawrence, at IHSA Nationals held at the Kentucky Horse Park on May 4-8. Senior captain Marissa Cohen captured the coveted 2011 Cacchione Cup title, dominating the three phases of the class.

This is the second time in three years that the team has won both; they were the 2009 National Champions as well and graduate Lindsay Clark won the 2009 Cacchione Cup.

"This win was a huge team effort," said coach Michael Dowling. "We had a great support system and are extremely proud of everyone. It wasn't just the riders who helped us win--it was the entire equine department, students who came to help, the students who were cheering us on from back in NJ, and the entire team as a whole who worked together all year to help make this a success. We cannot express our gratitude to all of them enough."

"In order to be successful, you have to have a very grounded team and it definitely showed in our win, from the students at home cheering us on, the riders, and the volunteers who came to Nationals," added Heather Clark. "We are very proud of and looking forward to the success of the team in the future."
