American National Riding Commission - ANRC
The American National Riding Commission, Inc. (ANRC) was established in 2006 to continue the goals and activities of the Affiliated National Riding Commission, which existed as part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) for more that 60 years.
The original purpose was to initiate a standardized method to educate riders in hunt seat equitation and to create a "Rider Certification" system to assess riding ability and knowledge of riding theory. ANRC continues to support these goals with competitions, clinics, and distribution of educational materials.
The ANRC is an affiliate of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA).
Centenary College has been a member institution of the ANRC since 2002. As such, a team of three riders is selected annually to represent the college at the National Collegiate Championships held each April. This competition is an equitation event consisting of four phases: a written exam based on horsemanship and riding theory, a dressage portion, a stadium course, and a hunter trials phase. In 2007, Centenary College hosted this prestigious event with the team earning the Reserve Championship.

Coaches

Professors Tara Clausen and Michael Dowling have been coaching the Centenary College ANRC team since 2001. They have traveled all over the east coast to attend the ANRC Invitationals, which are held in the fall, and the major competition, which is held in the spring. This competition is available for upperclassman and students that are in the Intermediate level riding classes or above. Tara and Michael start to look for what horse suits each rider a few months prior to the competition. Then that student will be allowed to ride that particular horse in their riding class so they can become more familiar with each other. Tara and Michael take extreme pride in developing the horse and rider combination in order to succeed at the ANRC Championships.
