Outward Bound

Outward Bound is an internationally recognized non-profit organization that teaches leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem solving through experiential learning.  Outward Bound was first conceived in Great Britain in 1941 and has since become the premier adventure based education program in the world.  The program continues to excel in its long-standing tradition of using the wilderness as a "classroom" for self discovery.  Programs touch the lives of more than ever before.  Today, Outward Bound Programs reach more than 60,000 people each year.  It is a leader in developing temwork, communication, and confidence.

Courses vary in length from weeklong intensive programs to three month programs.  Centenary provides course credits as follows:

  • 7 day program = 3 credits
  • 14 day program = 4 credits
  • 22 day program = 6 credits
  • 26 day program = 8 credits
  • 3 month program = 15 credits

Students who want college credit must also complete a reflective portfolio demonstrating the Outward Bound Learning Outcomes and submit both student and instrucor evaluations.  If you are interested in attending an Outward Bound Course, you must do the following:

  1. Go to the Centenary College catalog, http://www.centenarycollege.edu/cms/index.php?id=1240. The catalog is a pdf file.  Once it is open, go to the section labeled "Professional Development and Continuing Education."  Choose a course that you are interested in.
  2. Go to the Outward Bound web site, http://www.outwardbound.org and locate the schedule of courses to find out when your desired course is scheduled.
  3. Send an email to Al Martin, martina@centenarycollege.edu and request a syllabus that will include instructions to complete the portfolio or if you have any questions.
