Student Employment Program

The Student Employment program is designed to give Centenary students the opportunity to earn money and get on-the-job training while pursuing a degree. It provides on-campus part-time employment that is funded through Financial Aid and Centenary College. There are a limited number of off-campus positions that fulfill Centenary’s commitment to partnering with the community.

When a student files the Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA), it acts as an application for federal, state, and college assistance, including campus employment. Some students are awarded Federal funds and others are covered by funding that is provided Centenary.

International Students need to initiate the Student Employment process through the International Student Coordinator, Hye-Jin Lee at extension 2267.

Students are advised to choose positions in their field of major interest in order to gain the long-term benefit of working in an area that serves their goals and plans.

As of the Fall Semester of 2011, any student who wants to work, and has the proper identification, is eligible for a job. Proper identification is a photo ID and an original Social Security card or a passport.

What’s in it for ME?

A Student Employment position is more than a way to put money in your pocket. Learning to deal with a work environment and conducting yourself professionally is an important piece of the educational package. And employment experience is great for your résumé. Your supervisor is a perfect reference for your first career position after Graduation. So, be sure to put your best effort into your job!

How many hours do I need to work?

Students work a maximum of 10 hours a week. They may work less, but they may not work more (unless the Supervisor has a special need and contacts The Career Center to discuss increased hours). Some positions are for only a few hours a week.

What is the hourly rate? When do I get paid?

Students are paid $7.50 per hour. Wages are paid once a month. The pay schedule is on the back of the Timesheet. On the turn-in date, your supervisor (not the student) will take the Timesheet to The Career Center. If your Timesheet is late, your paycheck will be late, too! It will be paid in the following month’s payday.

How can I get a Student Employment Position?

Job opportunities are posted on the Career Services webpage under Student Employment. Check out the jobs, and attend the Student Employment Job Fair held in the beginning of the Fall Semester to meet with hiring departments.

Your next step is to sign up for a Student Employment Workshop. You can do this at the Job Fair or The Career Center in the Seay Building.

  • Bring your Photo ID,
  • Original Social Security Card,
  • A copy of your class schedule.

You and your new Supervisor will set up a regular work schedule. You will keep track of your hours on a Timesheet. On the date listed on the back of the Timesheet, you and your Supervisor will sign it and the supervisor will deliver it to the Career Center in the Seay Building.

What forms are required for me to work?

The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires that the employment eligibility of everyone (including students) be verified before employment begins. This verification is done on the I-9 form, which you will fill out in The Career Center. You will need:

ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • U.S. Passport
  • Certificate of U.S.
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Alien Registration Receipt Card

OR ONE OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Photo ID (Driver’s License or Photo ID issued by Federal, or State of Local Government Agencies)
  • Original Social Security Card (Sorry, no copies!)

In addition, each student must complete State and Federal W-4 forms in order to be taxed at the appropriate rated. These forms will be provided at The Career Center.

What is expected of me as an employee?

Arrive on time to your workplace. Call your Supervisor if you cannot make it to work due to illness or academic activities. Several reports of tardiness or absence will result in a request for your resignation.

Dress appropriately. You represent Centenary when you work as part of the staff. Show up at work with clean clothes, no sweatpants or tank tops, no ripped jeans or flip-flops or T-shirts with dirty words. Do shower and comb your hair! Look like the professional that you are!

Conduct yourself in a professional manner. Ditch the gum. Speak up. Be courteous at all times. Own your job and take pride in it. What you do is a necessary part of making Centenary work!

Project a positive attitude: smile, care about your work. It IS what you make it!

Keep accurate records of hours worked, and discuss any scheduling conflicts with your Supervisor. Make sure your supervisor turns in your Timesheet on the expected date at Payroll/HR in the Seay Building. Late Timesheets mean late pay!

Where can I pick-up my paycheck?

Your paycheck will be put in your College mailbox on the date listed on the back of your timesheet. For commuter students, you can pick up your paycheck in the Mailroom on Pay Day. Be sure to turn in your timesheet to The Career Center on the date listed on the back to your timesheet.

Starting April 2012 students will be able to sign up for The Aline Card from ADP which will allow you receive your pay through a debit card. You can learn more here.

Where do I get the timesheet?

Your Supervisor will have timesheets to give you or can also always get timesheets from The Career Center.

What if I don’t like my job or my supervisor?

Hey, it happens! But stick with your new position long enough to really give it a try. Talk to your supervisor, and ask if there is something more that you should be doing to make things work. If all else fails, please stop at The Career Center and we will help you. Do not just stop working – after all, you wanted to have a work-study job; maybe this one is just not the right position for you. And in fairness to your employer, you need to give a week’s notice.

Family Relations

As of the Spring 2013 Semester, student employees may not be related to any individual in the department that employs them.
