Books generally offer a more comprehensive coverage and will provide the ability for in-depth research.

 

Scholarly research, found in journals, offer the advantage of currency and the detailed study of a topic.

 

Web sites contain useful and pertinent information, but also have fewer quality standards and require the researcher to apply a higher level of critical judgment.

Finding Books

Refer to the On-line Catalog located on our web site to locate books that explore your topic: http://www.centenarycollege.edu/library  The catalog may be searched in a variety of ways including the author's name, title, keyword or subject heading.

Interlibrary Loan

If the library does not have a book or periodical article you need, you may initiate the process of interlibrary loan.  Interlibrary loan will request the loan of the desired material from an another library and within two weeks, it will be sent to the Taylor Memorial Library for pick up.  When ordering, remember to allow at least two weeks for the loan process.  Another method of requesting interlibrary loan material is by utilizing the JerseyCat form found on the Library's web site.

Databases

The databases may be accessed from the library web page, http://www.centenarycollege.edu/library

 

The best databases to use for company research are:

 

EBSCO Academic Search Premier

 

This database can be accessed by clicking on the EBSCO link on the Library's home page, then EBSCO Host Web and then Academic Search Premier.  If you access the database from home the ID is centenary, and the password is college. 

This is a very extensive database and contains a number of periodicals including popular, trade and scholarly literature periodicals.  Note that this database is not the same as the database found at your local public library.  It is academic in its contents.

 

ProQuest: ABI/Inform Hoovers

 

ABI and Hoovers are accessed by selecting ProQuest on the Library's home page and then selecting the specific database.  If you access the databases from home, use the following Account Name 004NBSSJHF and the password is welcome.

 

The ABI Inform databases contain business periodicals.  The database is recommended for all types of business research.

 

Hoovers is the best place to begin when you are doing company research.  The database contains a large number of company profiles and is a good place to begin your company research.  The overview provides a general understanding of the company.

 

Lexis-Nexis

 

Lexis-Nexis may only be accessed and used on main campus the Parsippany CAPS campus.  The company does not provide ID and passwords.  In order to access this database, go to the Library's home page and click on Vale, then Lexis-Nexis.  See Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe Company Research for more information.

GENERAL INFORMATION

 

Yahoo Finance - http://finance.yahoo.com/ Yahoo Finance provides financial information about companies.  The information provided includes a stock history, news, reports, analyst opinions and key statistics.

 

Google News - http://www.news.google.com   Google news is an Internet news aggregator.  It provides an international news perspective and allows you to sign-up for new alerts.

 

COMPANY INFORMATION

 

Annual Reports Online - http://zpub.com/sf/arl/arl-www.html  This site provides information on how to access and read annual reports.  There is also a guide to the reports of non-profit entities.

 

Corporate Information - http://www.corporateinformation.com/  The site provides links to corporate information worldwide.  The site is known for the corporate profiles provided but it requires you to register before you can use the service.

 

Forbes Lists - http://www.forbes.com/lists/   Forbes produces a number of "top" lists.  A number of lists are available.  Full text requires a subscription.

 

Researching Company Reports - http://www.library.ubc.ca/lam/company_annual_reports.html  The University of British Columbia has produced this guide to company research.

 

Corporate Entities - http://123world.com/corporate/   This web site links to the home pages of major corporations.

Kompass - http://www3.kompass.com/kinl/en/   This international company directory provides a number of search methods, by database, product, company, name, location, trade name and executives.

 

Thomas Regional - http://thomasregional.com   This is the web site of the Publisher of Thomas's Register.  Primarily searchable by product.

 

Webster's Business Guide - http://www.webdir.net/default.asp   This directory can be searched by product, company name, SIC codes and NAICS codes.

First Gov - http://www.firstgov.gov/  This web site is the US governments web portal.

US Department of Commerce-Economic Analysis - http://www.commerce.gov/economic_analysis.html  The Departments web page provides links to economic and industry statistical information.

 

FDIC Banking Data and Statistics - http://www.fdic.gov/bank/statistical/   This site provides statistical data about the banking industry.

 

New Jersey Department of Commerce - http://www.state.nj.us/commerce/   Each state has a Department of Commerce that contain industry data for the state.  This is the New Jersey web page.
