Lady Cyclones Fall in PAC Playoffs 79-62 to Alvernia(2/25/08) Earlier this evening the Centenary Women’s Basketball team’s season came to an end with a 79-62 loss at Alvernia College in the opening round of the PAC Tournament. The Lady Cyclones finished the season with an overall record of 15-10, and a trip to the post-season their first year in the conference. In the first half the visiting Lady Cyclones jumped out to an early 9-5 lead, thanks to a quick eight points from sophomore Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin/Walkill Valley). The host Crusaders came right back over the next three minutes with a 5-0 run of their own to jump in front 10-9. By the 12-minute mark of the half, Alvernia had increased the advantage to 21-11. After the cutting the deficit to as little as five points numerous times over the next ten minutes, Centenary pulled to within 31-27 with 1:14 remaining in the period. Following an Alvernia basket, Van Tassel who scored 12 first-half points, once again came through for the visitor’s capitalizing on an old-fashioned three-point play. The basket plus-one pulled the women to within three at 33-30. Centenary would get one more shot that was blocked, and went into the intermission trailing by three. The Lady Cyclones opened the second half on a 9-5 run, which included back-to-back three pointers by sophomore Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea). (2/24/08) Centenary senior Mike Gummerson (Newton/Kittatinny) finished the day at the Metropolitan Conference Tournament with a record of 3-1, which included a pair of major decisons and one pin. His effort was good enough for third place in the 133 lbs weight class and to solicit one of the Conference's Wild Cards selections to the Division III National Tournament which gets underway March 7th and 8th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. With his selection to this year's National Championships, Gummerson becomes a three-time National Qualifier, the first in the history of the Centenary Wrestling program.
Centenary's Way Scores Career High 39 in 83-65 Win
(2/22/08) Last evening the Centenary Women's basketball team completed their regular season with an 83-65 win over Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA. The victory closes the Lady Cyclones season at 15-9 overall, 10-6 in the PAC. It also solidified the 5th seed for Centenary in next week's PAC Conference Tournament, as they will travel to Alvernia College for a first round match-up at 7:00pm Centenary senior Ayana Way (Edison/John P Stevens), followed the old adage, "save the best for last", as she scored a career high 39 points to pace the Lady Cyclones. Way's 39 came on an oustanding 17-for-29 shooting night, which included 5-for-11 from the free throw line. It not only was a career high for herself, it was also a team high for the season, and the third highest single-game point total in the country this season among Division III players. Along with their captain's performace, Centenary played an all-around good game holding the host Falcons to just 32 and 33 points respectively in each half. More... (2/19/08) In their final game of the season the Centenary men’s basketball team took on PAC rival Neumann College in the second half of a double-header with the women. In this night of senior recognition the men were disappointed by the Knights by a score of 85-76. The two teams traded the lead for the majority of the first half, with neither team taking control. Ten minutes in the game was still neck in neck and with three minutes senior Kyle Boone (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) hit a three pointer to knot the game up once again at 36. As time wound down, the Knights were able to gain a small advantage by extending their lead to seven going into the break. The second half began with the Knights extending their lead to ten early into play. The Cyclones continued to trail for the next ten minutes as Neumann continued to increase the deficit. More... (2/19/08) This evening the Centenary women’s basketball defeated visiting Neumann College 87-67 in their senior recognition night. This game marked the last game that the women will play in the Folkner Family Gymnasium this season. The Lady Cyclones came out on fire, going on a 22 to 4 run over the first 10 minutes of play. The women saw their lead increase up to a high of 29 points before the Knights gained a shooting rhythm. Sophomore Kristen Camuso (Staten Island/St. Joseph's By the Sea) hit four shots form behind the arc and tallied 16 points which helped the women take a 43-26 lead into the locker room. The second period saw much of the same with the Lady Cyclones keeping a lead of more than 15 for the majority of play. The two teams traded baskets but the Knights were not able to decrease their deficit until seven minutes left in play when the Knights went on a 9-0 run. More... (2/16/08) The Centenary men’s basketball team played the second half of a double-header with Gywnedd-Mercy this afternoon in the Folkner Family Gymnasium. The men were out-matched by their PAC Conference opponent, losing 94-64. The game began with the two teams trading baskets and Centenary taking the lead for the first ten minutes of play with baskets by Will Atkinson (Hazlet/Raritan) and Andrew Baker (Sparta/Sparta). Halfway through the first period the game was knotted up at 14 but from there the Cyclones lost control. The Griffins went on a 26 to 3 run, putting them ahead of Centenary by 20 going into the halftime break with a score of 43-23. The second half began with Tom Keenan hitting two three pointers for the Griffins, extending their lead to 26. Senior Josh Davidson (Beesley’s Point/Ocean City) came off the bench for the Cyclones and added nine points to the men’s total, all in the second period. More... Gywnedd-Mercy Handles Lady Cyclones
(2/16/08) The Centenary women’s basketball team took on PAC Rival Gwynedd-Mercy this afternoon. The Lady Cyclones fell to the conference front runners 83-71 to take their overall record to 13-9 and their PAC record to 8-6. The women got behind early in the first half as the Griffin’s went on a 12-3 run to start the game. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes but Centenary couldn’t close the gap, trailing by an average of 10 points. Shots by Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) and Marissa Distasio (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy) took the Lady Cyclones back within six but as the halftime buzzer sounded the Griffins had a nine point lead. At the end of the half, Roberts paced the team with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. |
