2007-2008 Season OutlookThe Centenary College wrestling team under the leadership of second year coach John Garriques, looks to have a successful season this year. The Centenary wrestling program has come a long way, beginning as a club team seven years ago, to beating 13th ranked team in the country, Wilkes University, and hanging with eighth ranked TCNJ. In his short tenure at the school, Coach Garriques has already started taking large strides towards the goals that he and the team have set out to achieve and with 18 returning wrestlers, the team should have a strong base on which to build. With the loss of captain Seth Wisner to graduation, the team will look to their returning upperclassmen to provide an example of the hard work, determination and self discipline it takes to wrestle for the Cyclones. Along with the wrestlers returning to the program, there are a combination of freshman and transfers that total 18 new faces in Garriques’ line up. Highlighting the returnees are senior captains Mike Gummerson, Ricky Redd, and Jared Duffy. Last year Gummerson was the lone Cyclone to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, achieving that goal for the second time in his career. He was also ranked as high as fifth in Division III wrestling by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. This year looks to be a promising one for the Centenary veteran. Including Gummerson, the Centenary wrestling team has had four NCAA Division III national qualifiers in recent years and Coach Garriques is looking to double their statistics this year. Senior Rickey Redd, is coming off an overall record of 23-11 in the 2006/07 season, and will be one of Garriques wrestlers looking to qualify for the National Tournament. Last year Redd earned a first place finish at Monarch Tournament (King’s College PA) and a second place finish at the Doug Cherry Invitational (Northampton Community College). He also placed second in the Skyline Conference. Jared Duffy is the third senior captains and another of Centenary’s most accomplished wrestlers. Last season in the 165-pound weight class, Jared recorded a team high in wins, finishing with an overall record of 28-11. He also placed in the top three at four tournaments throughout the season, earning a first place finish at the Doug Cherry Invitational. This trio will be joined by senior Anthony Greene at 197-pounds; juniors Anthony Accardi at 133-pounds, Kyle Nasdeo at 149-pounds, and Mike Torsiello at 157-pounds. Adding to the long tough road to attaining Centenary Colleges first wrestling All-American will be 12 true freshmen and six transfers. These new additions will add not just talent but depth to the Cyclones line up. Centenary is looking for a great year this winter; their goal is to crack the National Wrestling Coaches’ Associations’ rankings. Last season the team earned their stripes, this year it is time to be recognized. Coach Garriques can already see a couple of All-American candidates on his squad. “It’s all about how much you want it, and how much you are willing to sacrifice. Remember there is always someone else out there that might be training harder then you. For our seniors, it is their last chance to make their marks; if they put in the time they can become Centenary’s first All American.”
