Centenary did however have the better scoring chances but were unable to push any past Leb Val goaltender Alyson Reitmeyer.  In the second period it was unfortunately more of the same for the Lady Cyclones as they had a few shots slide just wide of the goal keeping the game scoreless through the first 75 minutes.  Then in the 76th minute, the Dutchmen capitalized on one of their two second half corners, when Ely Kirkhoff found the foot of Kylee Zeisloft giving LVC the 1-0 advantage.  Just over six minutes later the visitor’s tacked on a second tally when Dana Thomsen gathered a rebound off another corner kick for her first goal of the season.

The pair of goals proved to be enough for the Dutchmen who move to 1-0 with the victory, while Centenary falls to 0-1 with the opening loss.  For Centenary, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville/Hunterdon Central) made five saves.

CSAC Coaches Select Cyclones as Women’s Soccer Pre-Season Favorite

(8/27/08) Aston, Pa. – Centenary College’s Women’s Soccer team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) coaches’ poll. The 2007 conference runner-up received four of eleven possible first-place votes for a total of 107 points, finishing ahead of Marywood University.

“Entering the 2008 season as the conference favorite is a compliment to the program and shows what a successful season we had in 2007,” said Head Coach Kevin Davies. “Although it is an honor, it now places a target on our backs this fall, which will create a challenge for us in every game.”

New to the conference in 2007, the Cyclones are looking to mimic the strong showing of last season.

Marywood University earned a total of 103 points for a close second place finish. Cabrini College was selected third with 97 points.

Gwynedd-Mercy College (78), Baptist Bible College (74), Philadelphia Biblical University (70), Immaculata University (67), Neumann College (57), Cedar Crest (27), Keystone College (25), and the College of Notre Dame (21) rounded out the voting.

The 2008 CSAC Championship begins with quarterfinal action on Monday, November 3rd. The CSAC Championship Game is set for Saturday, November 8th at the highest remaining seed.

2008 Women's Soccer Season Outlook

SEASON OUTLOOK

This year the Centenary Women’s Soccer Team is looking to emulate their great start last year in the newly named Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) this fall.  With 15 returning players the women’s team has a core of skill and experience that Coach Davies believes could help his team make their second season in the new conference a successful one. The women only lost three seniors from their 2007 roster and the eight incoming recruits should provide the team with a great mix of veteran leadership to go along with young talent.

DEFENSE

The Lady Cyclones return their entire defense, three of which were named second team all-PAC Conference. Seniors Melissa Hoffman and Lauren Loe along with junior Lisa Stankiewicz will be ably assisted by junior Cheryl Stark and tranfers Candice Yanuzzi, a standout at Morris Catholic, and JUCO All –American Erin McDonald.

MIDFIELD

Once again the midfield will be very competitive with no less than eight players vying for a starting spot. Returning almost all the midfield from last year, the core begins with sophomore Bianca Santulli, a second team All-PAC performer.  Junior Kiti Ovaskainen, along with sophomores Danielle Dole and Sam Pena will be pushed for their positions  by sophomore Kelley Michanczk, juniors Diana Gazzano and Christina Stassi, as well as senior Jerilyn Carine.  Coach Davies is excited by the talent of  incoming midfielders. Both Kelsey Vlachos, a four year starter at the very successful Bridgewater program and Brittany Overland, a stand out for Newton are equally comfortable in the midfield as any forward position. Lucy Szumilo, a Clifton graduate  will also see time in the midfield.

FORWARDS

The loss of Clare Johnson and Tanya DiDonna, arguably two of the best players to come out of the Centenary Women’s Soccer program is difficult, but the loss has been softened with the acquisition of Jen Dexter, a former Division I player at Rutgers University. She will certainly fill part of the void left by the pair of graduates. Sam Vanni, who improved her game during the Spring will be someone to keep an eye on this year. Ashley Gerber will also be looking to add to the fire power up front. Incoming freshmen, Kim Kupper and Caitlin Ververka round out a very exciting group of forwards that Coach Davies hopes will cause opponents a few problems.

GOALKEEPERS

Ashley Denti had a fine freshmen season and will be looking to improve on that with the experience she gained in her first year in goal. Senior, Megan Anderson, will be Denti’s competition this season for playing time.

SCHEDULE

This fall the Women’s Soccer team opens their season, hosting the first annual Lady Cyclones Classic Tournament, on August 30th and 31st.  Centenary will be joined by Drew University, Lebanon Valley College, and Greensboro College for the weekend event.  Following the tournament, the women continue a two week of stretch of non-conference games, leading them into CSAC play which gets underway the final week of September .  Centenary will then close out the month of October with a final pair of non-conference games on the road at Richard Stockton and at Immaculata University.

Coach Davies and the Lady Cyclones are certainly looking forward to nothing less than having their playing season extend closer to the Thanksgiving Holiday.  CSAC Conference playoffs get started the first week of November, with the NCAA’s slated for the middle part of the month.

Lady Cyclones Play First Ever Alumni Game

(4/12/08) - This afternoon the Centenary women’s soccer team played their first annual alumni game out on Cyclone Field.  In a tough fought game the alumni were defeated by the Lady Cyclones  2-0.  A penalty kick by sophomore Diana Gazzano sealed the victory with less than 20 minutes to go in the game.

The women started their non-traditional season two weeks ago and this game marked their first outing of the spring.  Centenary heads Philadelphia University next weekend for a seven aside tournament where they take on Dominican, Felician and two club teams.

Following the game, both teams all who came out to watch were treated to a luncheon in honor of the alum who returned to participate.

Villanova Alum to Join Women's Soccer Staff

Coach Erica Stewart

The Centenary Women’s Soccer program has announced the hiring of Erica Stewart as the program’s Assistant Coach beginning in the Fall of 2008.  Stewart, who played her high school soccer in the state of New Jersey at Cranford HS before moving onto Villanova University, will join Head Coach Kevin Davies on the Lady Cyclone sidelines this August.

Stewart comes to Centenary following an amateur career at Cranford where she earned All-State Honors and helped the Cougars to a #1 ranking in New Jersey and a #2 ranking nationally (USA Today / NSCAA) in 2000, as the team went an incredible 20-0-1 and won the NJSIAA Group III Championship.  She was member of the State Cup Champion MC Dynamo in 1998 and 2000.  At Villanova, Stewart was impact player from the freshman year on.  She scored the deciding penalty kick in a shootout victory over Boston College in the Big East Championship as a junior, giving the program their first ever Conference Title.  Throughout her four years the Wildcats compiled an overall record of 56-20-15 and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

Following her collegiate playing career, in 2006 Stewart became the Head Coach of the U17 CWS Red Devils.  From 2005-2007, Erica served as an assistant coach for the Rutgers University Women’s Soccer Team under Head Coach Glen Crooks.  She also served as a coach with the NJ ODP program since 2006.  Currently she is a member of the Jersey Sky Blue, who presently participates in the W League.  The Sky Blue are hoping to join the Women’s Professional League, which begins play in 2009.

When asked how he feels Erica is going to impact his program, Head Coach Kevin Davies said, “She is going to have a tremendous impact on our players during practices.  Her playing experience and knowledge of the game will definitely be an asset in getting our players to perform at the next level.”
