The action began in the second half when The Cougars got out in front of Centenary off of a goal by Kim Suchoski in the 56th minute of play. Twenty minutes later the Lady Cyclones got in an even deeper hole when Misericordia’s Katie Shaner put a ball over the head of goalkeeper Coree Reuter (La Center,WA/La Center). Just five minutes after Misericordia's second goal, Centenary got back into the game when seniors Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South) and Clare Johnson combined off a corner kick. DiDonna kick sent a line drive screaming to the near post and Johnson was able to beat the keeper and head the ball into the back of the net. The Lady Cyclones kept pressing and just over four minutes before the buzzer, freshman Sam Vanni (Haskell/Lakeland) slipped a ball past keeper Jemila Najjar-Keith to even the score and send the game into overtime. Freshman Danielle Dole (Wall/Wall) had the assist on Vanni’s goal for her first collegiate point. The Lady Cyclones emerged victorious four minutes into the first overtime period when Johnson got a one on one with Misericordias keeper and was able to slide the ball into the corner of the net. Reuter totaled eight saves in the match while Najjar-Keith grabbed five. The Lady Cyclones are now 2-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the PAC Conference as they prepare for their next match this weekend against Richard Stockton at 1:00pm on Cyclone Field. This game is the first match-up in a double header with the Centenary men’s team. Boxscore Lady Cyclones Pick Up Their First PAC Victory
(9/12/07) Freshman Sam Peña (Ogdensburg/Wallkill Valley) recorded her first collegiate points and the game winning goal in the Lady Cyclones match against the Alvernia Crusaders this afternoon in Reading, PA. This game marked Centenary’s first ever victory in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference as well as their first victory of the season. Once again the women were able to get out to an early lead when Sam Vanni (Haskell/Lakeland) played a through ball to the feet of senior Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) who was able to touch the ball past keeper Danielle Fitzpatrick with some quick footwork and find the back of the net. This goal marked Johnson’s third of the season. The Lady Cyclones controlled the game for the rest of the first half but a few breakdowns in the second period of play put pressure on freshman keeper Ashley Denti (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) who came up with a few outstanding saves to keep her team in the lead. Despite the women’s efforts, Crusaders forward Stephanie Loftus was finally able to get the equalizer in the 70th minute and put the pressure back on Centenary. Luckily, Peña was up to the challenge and when senior Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South) sent a cross screaming into Alvernia’s penalty box in the last ten minutes of play, she got her head on it and put it away. Denti tallied four saves in net while Alvernia keeper Fitzpatrick grabbed five. The Lady Cyclones are now 1-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC. The women finish up their stream of road games this Saturday when they take on former Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph’s-Patchogue at 1:00pm. Boxscore Lady Cyclones fall to Widener 4-0
(9/9/07) Saturday turned out to be a disappointing afternoon for the Lady Cylones as they fell to Widener 4-0 after battling Rowan to overtime the previous evening. With less than 24 hours rest the women’s team couldn’t find the energy they needed to keep up with the fresh Widener University. From the opening whistle Centenary was flat and it was not long until Widener capitalized on their opportunities. Sam Baer (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) scored the first goal in the 13th minute and the onslaught continued when senior Sam Hand (Millville/Millville) netted a penalty kick and a second goal off a cross from Baer. Widener was able to put another goal past goalkeeper Coree Reuter (LaCenter, WA/La Center) before the end of the first half. The Lady Cyclones picked up the pace a bit and were able to keep the Pride out of their net in the second half, however the damage was done and the final score stayed 4-0. Centenary was out-shot by Widener 10-4 and goalkeepers Reuter and Ashley Denti (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) both made three saves apiece. The women open up their conference games this Wednesday at 4:00pm when they travel to Reading, PA to take on Alvernia College. 2007 Season OutlookThis year the Centenary Women’s Soccer Team is looking forward to a great new start in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference this fall. With 10 returning players the women’s team has a core of skill and experience that Coach Davies believe could help his team make their debut in the new conference a successful one. The women only lost one senior from their 2006 season and the 13 player recruiting class should provide the team with a great mix of veteran players and a lot of new blood. Defense Returning starters in the backfield for the Lady Cyclones are junior Melissa Hoffman and sophomores Lisa Stankiewicz and Cheryl Stark. Both Stark and Stankiewicz were solid players as freshmen and their chemistry continued to develop throughout the spring season. The women will be looking, possibly to one of the newcomers to fill a position in the back for graduated senior Michelle Yerkes. Junior transfer from California, Lauren Loe could have an advantage with two seasons of collegiate soccer under her belt. Freshman back Sam Peña and a few of the other incoming freshman midfielders could also contribute on defense. Midfield The midfield looks to be the most competitive position for the women this year with nine new midfielders being added to the team’s roster. The team will look to senior Tanya DiDonna who totaled 14 points scoring five goals and grabbing four assists for leadership in the central midfield position although she may also see time as a forward. Returning sophomore Christina Stassi who added two goals and two assists to Centenary’s stats last year will also push for a starting position. Junior Jerilyn Carine and sophomore Diana Gazzano will both add depth and experience to the Lady Cyclones midfield. Coach Davies expects that newcomers Bianca Santulli, Melanie Pupo will be looking to challenge for starting positions in the center of the field while Danielle Dole, Sam Vanni, Kelley Michanczyk, Ashley Gerber, Michele Markey, Ariana Keiser and Emily Applegate could see time at any midfield position. Forwards Senior Clare Johnson returns for her last and hopefully best season with the Lady Cyclones. Johnson led her team in scoring in both her sophomore and junior year and presently has a total of 34 career goals. As one of the team’s senior captains, Coach Davies expects great things from Johnson in her final year. Johnson will be helped by returning sophomore Kiti Ovaskainen who netted four goals and had two assists in her freshman season and the other co-captain Tanya DiDonna who may see time at forward as well as in the midfield. Transfers Megan MacDonald and Lindsey Sittinger will also add a spark to Centenary’s offense. Goalkeepers Senior goalkeeper Coree Reuter is back for one more season and looking to maintain her starting position. Reuter started every game for the past two seasons and tallied 117 saves in her junior year. Incoming freshman Ashley Denti is expected to see time this fall and will be challenging Reuter for her starting position. As a senior Denti served as a team captain and tallied 11 total shutouts. Schedule The Lady Cyclones start their 2007 season off close to home with a game against neighboring Drew University on September 1st. Following their opening game with Drew, the women are on the road for the first half of September, playing their home opener against Misericordia University on September 19th. Centenary’s schedule consists of ten PAC Conference games and eight out of conference games. Coach Davies has high hopes for his teams opening season in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and he is looking for his team to improve on last years record while contending for a playoff spot in their new conference.
