![]() Centenary's DiDonna Named 2nd Team All-Conference
(11/6/06) Earlier today Centenary junior Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South) was named as a Skyline Conference 2nd Team All-Star. DiDonna, now three-time All-Conference selection for the Lady Cyclones, finished the year with five goals and four assists, for a total of 14 points this season. She completes her third season for the Centenary Women currently ranked in the top-10 of all three scoring categories for her career.
Lady Cyclones Drop 3-0 decision to end season(10/29/06) The Centenary Women’s Soccer Team’s season came to a close on Saturday after they were defeated by number one team in the Skyline Conference, Stevens Institute of Technology 3-0. Although the Lady Cyclones were still alive for a playoff bid going into the game, the women knew it would be a tough victory on the road. The Ducks pulled ahead in the 26th minute off of a goal from Sara Roeder (Portland, OR/Sunset). Assisting on Roeder’s goal was senior Megan Legendre (O’Fallon, IL/O’Fallon Township). The game remained 1-0 at the halftime mark. Only five minutes into the second half Stevens scored again when Alison Amos (Plano, TX/Plano Senior) sent a corner kick into Centenary’s 18 yard box. Salme Cook (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) was able to head the ball into the back of Centenary’s net. Stevens was able to add one more goal to the score when Katelyn Stewart (Manchester, NH/Central) launched a shot over Centenary keeper Coree Reuter (La Center, WA/La Center) in the 72nd minute making the final score 3-0. Overall the Lady Cyclones ended their season a little disappointed with a record of 5-13-1 and 3-3-1 in the Skyline Conference. Fortunately, the team only loses one senior this year so a strong core of players will be back for the 2007 season as Centenary begins a new era as a member of the PAC Conference. BOXSCORE Women’s Soccer Falls to Wilkes University 2-0(10/25/06) The Lady Cyclones took on non-conference opponent Wilkes University on Tuesday. Although they were able to hold the Lady Colonels scoreless until the last 20 minutes of the game, the women eventually fell to Wilkes 2-0. In the 72nd minute Wilkes was able to take the lead over Centenary when Dana Lehman (Mooresville, NC/Red Land) scored off of an assist from Suzie Zavistoski (Edison, NJ/Edison). With less than six minutes left Ashley Deemie (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) was able to add a goal when she scored off of a pass from Christina Waldele (Vienna, NJ/Hackettstown) to make the game’s final tally 2-0. Goalkeeper Coree Reuter (La Center, WA/La Center) had six saves in the game. The Lady Cyclones play Skyline rival Stevens Institute of Technology for their last game of the regular season on Saturday, October 28th. The women are 3-2-1 in the Skyline and are still looking for a conference playoff birth. BOXSCORE Lady Cyclones drop 4-1 loss to Scranton(10/21/06) The Centenary Lady Cyclones took on University of Scranton in a non conference match up this afternoon at Cyclone Field. The women came into this game looking to add another win to their record. Scranton began the game scoring in only the 4th minute. Eileen Sodano (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) was able to put a ball past goalkeeper Coree Reuter (LaCenter, WA/LaCenter). Assisting on the goal was Jessica Beha (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere). The Lady Cyclones evened the score in the 16th minute when Junior Tanya DiDonna (Coltsneck/Middletown South) hit a rocket shot into the upper right hand corner of the net off a pass from freshman Christina Stassi (Hackettstown/Pope John XXII). The Lady Royals retaliated before halftime when Molly Kelly (Maple Glen, PA/Mt. St. Joseph Academy) gave a ball to Emily McPhee (Holland, PA/Council Rock). McPhee’s goal put Scranton up 2-1 at the break. Twelve minutes into the second half the Lady Royals scored again when Erin Unterstein (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) slipped a shot past Centenary’s Reuter. Angie Bartizal (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) added one more goal for Scranton before the end of the game, making the final score 4-1. Sophomore Kathleen Long (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) assisted on Bartizal’s goal. Centenary is back on the road for their last two games of the regular season with their next game against non conference opponent, Wilkes University on Tuesday, October 24th. BOXSCORE Lady Cyclones Down Mount Saint Mary 4-0(10/19/06) The Centenary Lady Cyclones snapped their losing streak with a Skyline Conference victory over the Lady Blue Knights from Mount Saint Mary today. This win advances them to a Skyline Conference record of 3-2-1. Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) tallied two goals in the game while Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskeineoren Lukio) and Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/ Middletown South) both added a goal for the final of 4-0. Centenary struck early with Johnson scoring a goal in the 4th minute of the game, on an assist from Ovaskainen. The Lady Cyclones continued their attack in the 15th minute of play when Ovaskainen netted a goal off of a pass from junior Tanya DiDonna. The score remained 2-0 until the halftime whistle. Less than five minutes into the second half, junior Clare Johnson was able to slide her second goal past Mount Saint Mary keeper, Shannon Colligan (East Northport, NY /John Glenn HS). Following today’s game Johnson only needs one more point to put her at the 20 point mark for the season. Tanya DiDonna finished the game with a goal in the 86th minute off of a great assist from freshman Christina Stassi (Hackettstown/Pope John XXII). Centenary is currently 5-10-1 for the season. They look to improve this record when they play host to University of Scranton on Saturday, October the 21st. BOXSCORE Women's Soccer Edged by St. Joes 1-0.(10/17/06) Centenary came into this game looking to improve their Skyline record to 3 wins; however they were not able to overcome the Golden Eagles from St. Joes – Patchogue. The first half was relatively even with the Lady Cyclones taking six shots and the Golden Eagles taking five. Both teams were still looking for their first goal at the end of the first half. In the 63rd minute of the game, Patchogue’s Meghan Brady (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) was able to find the back of the net. Teammate Jackie Barbour(West Islip, NY/West Islip) sent a corner kick into Brady who was able to slip the ball past keeper Coree Reuter. Both Reuter (La Center,WA/La Center)and Golden Eagles keeper, Courtney Caden(Setauket, NY/Ward Meville) had four saves in the match. The Lady Cyclones play host to Mount Saint Mary Wednesday October 18th in another Skyline match up. They hope to improve their record to 5-10-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. BOXSCORE Lady Cyclones fall 1-0 to Manhattanville(10/14/06) Earlier in the day, the Centenary Women’s Soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Manhattanville College. In a game which saw both defenses play under great pressure all day, the deciding play was not made until late in the contest. The two sides played to a scoreless first half, with Manhattanville out shooting Centenary 7-2. The second half was more of the same up and down action with neither team being able to push one across. The Valiants recorded the game’s only goal in the 81st minute when Manhattanville’s leadings scorer Cybil Robinson (South Lake Tahoe, CA) headed in her eighth goal of the season. The visitors were able to hold off the Lady Cyclones over the final fifteen-plus minutes as goalkeeper Michele Ribeiro (West Hartford, CT) made three saves for the shut out. Centenary goalie Coree Reuter (LA Center, WA/La Center) made eight saves in the loss, which drops the women to 4-9-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the Skyline Conference. For Manhattanville the victory moves them into second place on the Skyline standings, and improves their record to 8-3-3 overall, 4-0-1 in conference. BOXSCORE WOMENS SOCCER TIES MOUNT SAINT VINCENT 2-2(10/11/06) The Centenary women got to come home a little earlier than planned when they hosted The College of Mount Saint Vincent today. Originally the game was scheduled as an away game but it was switched to Cyclone Field at the last minute. The Lady Cyclones came into this game 4-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference. They were looking for a victory to keep them undefeated in the Skyline conference. The game ended with the women tying the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent. The Lady Cyclones got off to a rocky start when they scored an own goal in the 13th minute of the game. It took some effort but luckily the women were able to get it back in the 35th minute when freshman midfielder Shannon Neville played a beautiful through ball to Tanya DiDonna(Colts Neck/Middletown South). DiDonna was able to slip the ball past goalkeeper Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside). In the second half the Lady Cyclones were able to pull ahead when they received a penalty kick for a hand ball in the box. Junior Clare Johnson(Morris Plains/Morristown) was able to bury the ball in the upper right hand corner of the net. The Lady Dolphins were able to retaliate with less than 10 minutes left to go in the game. Goalkeeper Coree Reuter (LaCenter, WA/LaCenter) made a save that deflected right onto Mount Saint Vincent’s Kelly Curran (Hopatcong/Jefferson Township). She passed it easily into the back of Centenary’s net. Mount Saint was able to hold Centenary to a 2-2 tie through overtime despite a shot differential favoring the Cyclones 27 to 4. The Lady Cyclones continue their play at home Saturday, October 14th. They are the first of three games on Cyclone Field for Homecoming this Saturday. The women take on Skyline rival Manhattanville in a very important conference game. The action will continue with Centenary men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse. Women’s Soccer Bested by Richard Stockton 2-0(10/7/06) Despite some wet weather, the Centenary Lady Cyclones traveled to Richard Stockton looking for their fifth win of the season. Unfortunately, the women were bested by the Lady Osprey’s 2-0. The game began with the ball staying mostly in the Cyclones defensive end. Keeper Coree Reuter made five saves in the first half keeping the home team scoreless heading into the half. In the 64th minute the Lady Ospreys finally broke the 0-0 tie, when junior Val Davison (Cranbury/Princeton) was able to push an unassisted goal past Centenary’s Reuter. Less than three minutes later, Stockton's Lindsay Roake (Neptune City/Neptune) gave the Osprey's a two goal cushion, with a goal off an assist from sophomore Stephanie Anderson (Hackettstown/Mt. Olive). The Lady Cyclones could not overcome the two goal deficit and fell to 4-7 overall. The Centenary women continue their stretch of road games on Monday, October 9th when they travel to Wilmington College in Delaware. BOXSCORE Centenary Women Fall 2-1 in Overtime(10/5/06) Centenary started the first of 4 games on the road in a game against the Lady Defenders from Baptist Bible College. The Lady Cyclones came into this game 4-5 and looking for a victory to bring them back to .500 on the season, however the game ended with the women falling to Baptist Bible 2-1 in overtime. The game began relatively slow with neither team holding possession of the ball. Then, in the 33rd minute Baptist Bible’s Brittany Brenner (Hopkins, MI/Freedom Baptist ) was able to slide a goal past the Cyclones keeper Coree Reuter (La Center,WA/La Center). Brenner’s goal was the only goal of the half and the score remained 1-0 until halftime. After fighting hard for most of the second half the Lady Cyclones were finally able to retaliate when junior Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) scored in the 86th minute. Assisting on Johnson’s goal was junior midfielder Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South). Centenary battled through the end of regulation to send the game into golden goal overtime. Then, with only a minute remaining in the first overtime period Baptist Bible was able to strike again. Once again, Brenner was able to slip a ball past the Reuter’s outstretched arms to end the game. Brenner’s second goal was assisted by Hannah Andrist (Clarks Summit, PA/Summit Christian Academy). Visiting Rangers Hold Off Lady Cyclones 1-0(10/3/06) Earlier this afternoon the Drew Women’s Soccer team downed host Centenary College by the final of 1-0, to snap a two-game losing streak. Neither side could break the ice through the opening half of play. Drew did manage to out shoot the host Lady Cyclones 8-3 in the period, however neither team put a mark on the board. The visiting Rangers pushed across the first goal of the game in the 56th minute, when Genie Valantassis (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) scored a header off a corner kick by Gabbie Haenn (Newton Square, PA/Penncrest), to take the 1-0 lead. Despite chances for Centenary to even the score and for Drew to put the game away, neither team was able to notch another goal. The lone goal from Valantassis ultimately held up as the visiting Rangers defeated the Lady Cyclones for their fourth victory of the season. Drew goalkeeper Ann Mularz (Linden, NJ/Linden) made four saves to preserve the shutout. The loss drops Centenary to 4-5 overall, as they now look ahead to Thursday’s game at Richard Stockton. (9/30/06) The Centenary Women’s Soccer team evened their 2006 record, cruising to a 6-0 shutout of visiting College of St. Elizabeth earlier today. The win improves the Lady Cyclones to 4-4 overall, as they head into a four-game stretch of very important non-conference match-ups. Centenary opened the scoring today very early, as junior Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South) scored on an assist from Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland) 17-minutes into the game. Ovaskainen was involved again just six minutes later when she netted her own unassisted goal increasing the lead to 2-0. The hosts tallied their third goal in a ten minute span when DiDonna scored her second of the day, this time unassisted, pushing the margin to a comfortable 3-0 advantage. From that point the Lady Cyclones were able to put in into cruise control, as they were never really challenged by the visiting Golden Eagles of CSE. Centenary freshman Alex Hayter (Belvidere / Belvidere) recorded the team’s four goal of the half in the 38th minute, giving the home team a 4-0 lead going into the halftime break. The second half did not bring any further excitement as both teams traded substitutions and Centenary took control of the ball, while capitalizing on two more scoring chances. Michelle Yerkes (Lumberton/Rancocas Valley), the lone Centenary senior, scored the first goal off a free kick which glanced off the CSE blocking wall and went past the goalkeeper. The final goal came from Clare Johnson (Morris Plains / Morristown) who took a pass from Tanya DiDonna, giving DiDonna a game high five points, and deposited it in the back of the net. Centenary goalie Coree Reuter (LA Center WA/La Center) played just over 63 minutes, and made four saves for her fourth victory of the year. BOXSCORE Women’s Soccer Tops Farmingdale State 3-0
(9/27/06) The Centenary women’s soccer team shut out Farmingdale State 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) tallied a goal and an assist in the victory. Freshman Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland) and Staci Huelat (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) both added goals in the win. The Lady Cyclones had to bounce back after a tough game on Monday and they did so starting in the 26th minute of the game when Clare Johnson slipped a shot past Farmingdale goalkeeper Kimberly Sontag (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook). Despite numerous shots from both teams the score remained 1-0 until halftime. Kiti Ovaskainen, was able to end the scoring drought in the 80th minute with a goal off of a pass from fellow freshman Lisa Stankiewicz (Moylan, PA/Archbishop Prendergast). Freshman Staci Huelat sealed the game in the 87th minute when she scored off a breakaway pass by Johnson. Sontag had seven saves in the game for the Lady Rams while goalkeeper Coree Reuter (LA Center, WA/La Center) had six. Midfielder Amanda Biondi (West Islip, NY/West Islip) led the Rams in shots with four, although the Lady Cyclones out shot the Rams 18-13 for the game. This victory improves the Lady Cyclones overall record to 3-4 and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference. Centenary is back at home on Saturday September 30th against The College of St. Elizabeth. BOXSCORE Lady Cyclones drop 1-0 decision to Montclair State(9/25/06) The Lady Cyclones fell 1-0 to the Montclair Red Hawks at home on Monday afternoon, bringing their overall record to 2-4. Montclair was able to get on the board when Natalia Sisti (Lincoln Park/DePaul Catholic) netted a goal off of a cross from Dara Nalven (Old Bridge/Old Bridge). Sisti was able to head the ball past Centenary keeper Coree Reuter (La Center, WA/La Center) in the 14th minute of the game. The Lady Cyclones created a few good scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize on any of them. Freshman Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskineoren Lukio) had a particularly good break when she was able to get herself a one on one shot with the keeper, however, Kristin Kuhman (Beachwood/Toms River South) from Montclair was able to make the save. Goalkeeper Coree Reuter had seven saves in the game while the Lady Red Hawks keeper had five. The women are back at home on Wednesday when they host Skyline Conference opponent, Farmingdale State at 4:00pm. Lady Cyclones Fall to William Paterson(9/18/06) Centenary’s record falls to 2-3 after a 5-1 loss to the William Paterson Pioneers on Monday night. The first goal was scored off of a deflected cross from Melissa Boka in the 8th minute of the game. The Pioneers second goal was scored by Jessica Reibis off of an assist from Ciatlin Higdon. Paterson’s Amanda Kurdyla was able to put away one more goal before halftime with Caitlin Higdon getting her second assist of the game. At halftime the Cyclones looked to close in on the three goal deficit. Unfortunately, the Pioneers, Melissa Boka was able to put her second goal past Centenary’s Coree Reuter. Senior Michelle Yerkes was able to spark a little life in the Centenary team by scoring off of a great combination play in the 65th minute. Junior Tanya DiDonna assisted on the goal. The Pioneers were able to answer back to Centenary by scoring one more in the 77th minute. William Paterson’s Melissa Boka scored for the third time, recording the hat trick. Centenary continues its play on Saturday, Sept. 23rd at Cyclone Field as it takes on Skyline opponent St. Joe's-Patchogue. BOXSCORE Lady Cyclones take down King's 3-1(9/9/06) The Centenary Women’s Soccer team defeated visiting King’s College (PA) by the final of 3-1 earlier this afternoon for their first victory of the 2006 season. Centenary wasted absolutely no time putting a distance between them and the visitors earlier today. Freshman Lisa Stankiewicz (Moylan, PA/Archbishop Prendergrast) created a turnover deep in the oppositions end, beat a defender, and scored just 0:42 into the game, giving the Lady Cyclones the 1-0 advantage. The hosts did not rest on their laurels, as just over four minutes later, Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) the team’s leading scorer a year ago, netted the second tally of game off an assist from Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck/Middletown South). With the game in hand to that point, Centenary played a ball controlled opening half and took the two goal lead into the halftime break. In the second period, King’s came out with more of a spark and put pressure on the home team. In the 55th minute the pressure paid off as Cynthia Smallwood (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) took the ball down the left sideline and beat Centenary’s keeper to pull the Monarchs within one. Unfortunately for King’s that would be as close as they would get. The Lady Cyclones added a third and decisive goal in the 67th minute, when Michelle Yerkes (Lumberton/Rancocas Valley) tallied her first points of the season on an unassisted goal. Centenary goalie Coree Reuter (La Center, WA/La Center) made nine saves in the victory, which improves the Centenary women to 1-2 overall on the early season. (9/5/06) The Centenary Women’s Soccer team opened their season this past weekend at the 11th Annual Swarthmore Kick Classic hosted by Swarthmore College. Despite the rain on Saturday night, the Cyclones took on host Swarthmore College. Although it was a close game throughout, Centenary fell 1-0 to Swarthmore on a goal by the Garnets’ Katie Kanuka in the 70th minute. Centenary recorded five shots throughout the match, two of which came from freshman, Kiti Ovaskainen. Ovaskainen also recorded Centenary’s only shot on goal. Lady Cyclone goalkeeper Coree Reuter totaled eight saves in the loss.
The Lady Cyclones were back in action on Sunday, where they dropped their second game 3-0 to Dickinson College. Centenary started the game a bit flat, letting in a goal just 3.22 into the game. Centenary regrouped and generated some offense in the second half; unfortunately Dickinson was able to capitalize on a letdown in Centenary defense scoring two more goals in the final ten minutes of play. Centenary recorded four shots for the game. Two Centenary players were named to the Swarthmore Kick Classic All-Tournament Team. Senior Michelle Yerkes and sophomore Nicole Borden were both chosen after their fine performances over the weekend. The Lady Cyclones are 0-2 on the young season. They will take on King’s College (PA) in their home opener this Saturday, September 9th at 1:00 pm. 2006 Women's SoccerSeason Outlook Defense Anchoring the Lady Cyclone’s defense will be senior Michelle Yerkes and junior Nicole Borden. The cyclones are looking for freshman Shannon Neville from Clifton Park, NY to be a great addition to the team’s defense. Along with Neville sophomore Melissa Hoffman and freshmen Lisa Stankiewicz and Cheryl Stark will vie for starting positions on the backline. Freshman Jen Navarro, Andrea Garcia and Jillian Denherder could also see time in the backfield. Midfield Returning in the midfield are junior Tanya DiDonna and sophomore Jerilyn Carine who combined to score five goals last year. Adding to the midfield firepower will be incoming freshmen Christina Stassi and Diana Gazzano. Along with helping out in the backfield, Stankiewicz will be pushing for a starting position in the middle of the field. Justine Collado and Alex Hayter will add depth to the Centenary midfield. Forwards Junior Clare Johnson returns for her third season with the Lady Cyclones. Clare led the team in scoring, netting eight goals in the 2005 season despite missing four games in the early part of last fall. Johnson will look for support from Kiti Ovaskainen a freshman from Finland and utility player Melissa Hoffman. Hoffman had a total of 13 points on the season a year ago, with four goals and five assists despite playing defense for a portion of the season. Newcomers Staci Huelat and Laurie Fitzpatrick are also expected to make a big contribution offensively. Goalkeepers Goalkeeping will play a big role in Centenary’s 2006 season. Junior goalkeeper Coree Reuter will be pushed for a starting position by incoming junior transfer Alex Schoen (Sussex CC) and returning sophomore Megan Anderson. Reuter started every game last season posting 103 saves on the year. The Centenary women kick off their 2006 season with games against Swarthmore College and Dickenson in the Swarthmore Kickoff Classic. The schedule includes seven Skyline conference games and 13 out of conference games. The Lady Cyclones will face their toughest opponent and last year’s Skyline Conference Champions in Stevens Institute of Technology in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, October 28th.
